This was a tough one to photo accurately. It looks way better in hand than in the photos, and I tried all kinds of lighting angles. There seems to be a thin layer of crusted dirt or corrosion on some of the surfaces, and some areas have what looks like a thin layer of metal peeling. Not sure if it's the actual surface of the coin or a layer of crud. Anyway, the amount of detail on the devices is much nicer than in the photos. I think this is a small date, small fraction, and I believe it's Sheldon-245, without the rim Cud on the reverse. I don't have a lot of experience with large cents, so I would appreciate thoughts on the grade and variety. Also, any thoughts on conservation?

Probably needs to be moved to the Grading subforum -- grade is TPG F Details - corrosion on the reverse is pretty severe. A very long soak in Verdi-Care is your best bet. Close denominator, wide date, 3 in drapery: S245 R3 (can't see the die scratch through U reverse due to corrosion). S244 (R4) is similar but fraction is spaced 1 00 instead of 100.

Thank you, paralyse. I wasn't sure if the grading subforum was the right place for this, but I'm fine if a moderator wants to move it there. Good thought about Verdi-Care.

Numerical grade doesn't make a lot of difference for a coin like this. If it were submitted (which I don't suggest) it would come back purple labeled Fine (or possibly VG) Environmental Damage.

Agree F Details. I like it, it's nicer than mine.

Thanks, everyone. I've never used Verdi-Care, but it looks pretty safe. I'll have to get some and give it a try. And thanks, paralyse, for confirmation of the Sheldon variety.

I love all the old copper and hope this one can be improved. I agree with the Verdi-care suggestion as it is a great product. I've had success with xylene or acetone to remove any organic matter and then a soak in Verdi-care. Bad Thad is the creator of Verdi-care and a member of this community. I and others have called upon him many times to help with difficult copper problems and he is awesome, awesome, awesome.

I thought I'd post a couple follow up photos on this large cent. I tried Verdi-Care on it yesterday as some suggested, and I think it looks improved, at least on the reverse. Still pretty corroded, but at least it won't get worse. It's still much nicer in hand. My first attempt at conservation, and I'm pleased with the result.

Outstanding work with the Verdi-Care. Nothing dramatic, but better appeal. It doesn't reverse damage, but it does prevent further damage and arrest any developing corrosion. It also conditions the surface.
Badthad would like to see this one, I think.
