Today as I was helping deal with some post-funeral things, someone mentioned there were some coins/notes that I should look through since I am "the coin guy" in the family.

Of course my ears pricked up and we sought out said stash. In the basement we found a plastic bucket partially filled with wheaties, an old Whitman cent folder, and some early 1900's silver. No paper but that might still be around somewhere that we didn't get to.

Initially most of the silvers look like slick Walkers or common Barbers but I have probably 15 pounds of wheats to go through.

Not expecting anything major but it's gonna be fun to go through. Coins en route back home with me; hope my checked bag is under 50 pounds or I'll have to ditch a black suit, new shoes, and my shave kit to save weight!

Photos and results forthcoming.

My grandmother passed away a few months ago and I went through her coin jars... Mostly Statehood Quarters and bicentennial pieces, but I did find 1979 wide rim SBA... I know it sounds dumb but I'm going to get it encapsulated by PCGS and have them add a pedigree to it in her honor...

Not dumb at all cj Weber, if there was ever a coin that should be encapsulated it's that Susan b. Sorry that you lost your Mamaw.

Funerals and everything that comes with them are an arduous challenging emotional mountain climb that we all face at one time or another. To have a bright spot of positivity in that stressful darkness is a blessing. I hope you get some nice Wheaties in there...

So sorry for your loss, My grandmother also passed away recently, she didn't have many coins but she did have a Mercury dime I'm gonna have turned into a necklace to wear on her memory.

Very sorry for your loss.

For me as well, a handful of coins from my grandfather and grandmother are the "tangible" memories I have to enjoy going forward; and I too have considered getting them slabbed for preservation and safety when I show them to my kids and share stories about our family story.
Rest in Peace

I've gone through enough funerals to completely understand your remorse over the loss of a loved family member.

I'm sure we all hope that you find lots of 1909 S VDB, 1914 D and 1922 plain in your poundage.

It's always great to look through a batch of Wheaties that you know haven't been scoured thirteen times before.

Sorry for your loss Celtic. I'm sure we'd all rather receive a stash like that while our loved ones are the ones handing it over. But at least folks knew enough to put them in your direction for safe keeping.

I hope you have a few 'fun finds' in the lot; you never know. Looking forward to seeing a few!

Thanks for the kind sentiments and thoughts, everyone. I appreciate it.

Home now and getting back into the swing of things; will probably get some time this weekend to sort through the pile (after mowing the lawn and catching up on other chores, of course).

@Cascade - yeah, thought about mailing them Priority but between my carry-on and my checked bag, I managed it. . Note to anyone who decides to fly with large masses of change like that, security will check your carry-ons and checked bags when they see that large mass of metal.

Anything unusual will gain attention. Having carried odd prototype equipment in my carry on bag, the three foot frozen kielbasa gained the most attention flying out of O'Hare.
