I got this 1994 penny in a sealed US Mint bag I bought from a dealer around 1999. This was the only one in the bag. The rest were all normal 1994 pennies. Thought maybe it was just some sort of discoloration, but I let it soak for 2-3 days in acetone, with no change to it. Is this made on a wrong metal blank, or blank for another country? Is it that something went wrong during the copper plating process? its color is uniform all around front and back. Any opinions?
Thanks,
Jim

The coins are copper plated zinc. As the plating solution reaches the end of it's life, there's a lot of zinc in the solution causing the yellowish color.

Just something that the coin came in contact with, possibly.

With BStauss3, this is what happens and is pretty common.

Thanks guys, that was my guess. Didn't think it was worth anything more than a penny, but was cool to find a yellow penny in a bag of shiny copper colored pennies, as it really stood out!!
I have another coin with a weird finish, that I really don't know what the reason might be, but it is one of the Presidential dollars not on a penny. Will post that over the weekend when I have time to dig it out.

Burton's theory sounds good, but this coin hardly shows any wear at all.
