Just not going to contribute to the MC status anymore. Dropping out of the VIP Club at CC&C. Will pick up any NCLT coins at my Post Office for free shipping as needed. Not that interested in advanced notice or special offers. Not that interested in hard to come by coins (Voyageur 2 Oz). Will pick up my annual Silver Dollars, Maple Leaf Coin, Chinese Zodiac Coins and reserved a Welcome to the World 2016 with my postal people. I don't buy as much NCLT anymore. If I do it is on sale at CA much after initial release.
I don't see the sense in spending a lot (even $1,000) to get free shipping, or - good grief - $5,000 for top tier MC status, not critical of those who choose to do this, all collectors are different. My collecting tastes are changing to decimal coins. Will still look at what is hot, but feeling a bit jaded with the sales at year end for most of the years NCLT offerings at 50% of initial release. We all evolve in our collecting tastes.

I plan to keep my MC membership at least through 2017 because it is Canada's 150 birthday and I am sure they will have special coins out. After that probably let it lapse.

Same here. I don't think I can keep up the momentum needed to maintain gold status beyond 2017.
I've already dropped out of automatically receiving xx for xx series and subscription items as the coins will eventually be made available singly anyways.

I lapsed mine after 2012 with Farewell to the Penny coins...

2013 was it for us. We just couldn't justify the loss on some.

Good decision SilverDon. Being a decimal coin guy, I find it much better to invest in a good quality silver decimal coin that will somewhat retain it's value as opposed to some coloured coin with no real numismatic value that will probably decrease in value over time. This is my opinion only and am sure that others will disagree.

I was never a MC member, but if you added up the $$ I have spent at the Post Office I would be for the last few years. If they have more than one you can pick the one you want.

Sounds like a well thought plan SilverDon! My main interest is decimal coins as well but I like to dabble in a bit of NCLT to add an element of current and newness to my collection, but do so without intentional buying of any set limit from any one source.
If I may ask, did your interest in coin collecting begin solely with NCLT, then at some point later evolve to decimal coinage? If so, how did that transition occur? The reason I ask is it seems many NCLT collectors never expand their interest whatsoever, which I think is unfortunate because both types of collecting can compliment each other.

Will agree with this. The problem in the collection of the items as coins (and of cause not only), that all the process of the collecting comes to "buy and store". Many people, I assume, just have no time or no will to learn about the subject. The question is just a budget. With NCLT and Commmemorative circulation coins the situation is bit different, cause they always in production...coin after coin, set after set, even here the bottom line is "buy, store, forget, buy new..."

Silveroid, good points.
Yes, NCLT is issued once a month, message boards light up, this or that coin is hot, almost sold out, "hurry and buy", yada yada ....then next month the cycle happens all over again. Whereas collecting circulated coin requires a certain amount of research and knowledge, indeed a learning journey, which might not interest everyone.. It's also a more personal pursuit, by that I mean it's not influenced by the group mentality, aka flavour of the moment, in the same way that NCLT often is bought, particularly the new releases.

I used to go to the mint boutique in Ottawa and just buy new rolls of twoonies and loonies at face value - store purchases would be added to Masters Club... I think they got wise to me after 2013...

Quote: If I may ask, did your interest in coin collecting begin solely with NCLT, then at some point later evolve to decimal coinage? Yes as a kid I collected decimal coinage in change, 1970 nickels, anything that was thought to be rare. But didn't stay with it. My wife bought me the first 20 for 20 coin in 2011 and I started to collect NCLT. I branched into the Silver Dollar series 1935 to 1967 and then filled the .500 Specimen Silver Dollars from 1971 on and Proof Dollars from the 80's and 90's. Varieties of King George VI 50 Cents is a great series as well. And I like to collect Proof Like coins of the 1950's and 1960's. So looking for errors and varieties with the loupe was more fun than buying and storing NCLT. I tend to look at my binders of decimal coins more than my store of NCLT coins. I will be selling off some NCLT that is not a fit for the collection and buying a 1945 Silver Dollar, 47 ML SD and eventually a 1948 SD. Will work on filling holes in the Dollars and then branch out. There are great American coins out there, other foreign coins, Aussie, Newfoundland and other Maritime coins, I am haunting all of the forums. Where it takes me, I don't know but am having a great time and the people on this forum are great. So much information available, I am learning and collecting smarter than before.

SilverDon thanks for sharing that, it's always interesting how different people get started. I'd never have guessed your decimal coin pursuit is relatively newly found given your knowledgable contributions to this forum. It's a very good thing that your wife sparked your revived interest through that first $20for$20 gift. (Best make sure you don't accidentally sell that one, you'll be in big trouble! LOL!)

I started in 2012 when the government got ride of the penny...Im not a "plastic" kind of person and always pay with paper bills and coinage, kind of old school I guess ,even though I'm not too old. losing the penny hit home a little , probly because I rolled thousands of them from my change jar all my life...some farewell to the penny NLCT were purchased and I've been hooked ever since....however the last year I've strayed away to bullion side of things.I have a list of RCM NLCT I want, but am waiting for the prices to drop even more to about 50% of the issue price, then I'll pull the trigger. I should also note that I've mostly been a Post office purchaser, like another member wrote I like the fact you can hand pick your coin if they have a few in stock.I never have had MC status. Eitherway I still like the RCM and look forward to seeing there releases every month!
