Got this one from my father in law. I think he probably got it at auction. The set has two merc dimes and a Standing Liberty quarter in a fancy plastic holder/"slab". Decent coins, but nothing spectacular. One of the dimes fills a hole in my merc album. I generally don't like to break sets, it just doesn't feel right to me, but I'm tempted to put that one merc in my album... I don't think the set has any added value does it? Your thoughts... I will post a picture tomorrow...

If you put that Mercury dime in your album, do you have one to replace it? It would keep the set "complete".

Hmmm... I do have one duplicate of an already filled hole... I wonder if I could crack the "slab" without destroying it...

The other side of the coin is that I could easily pick up another dime for a few bucks and leave the "set" intact...

The set may have sentimental value. Tough call. I have certainly broken a few sets to fill some holes.

Here is the set. The dimes are fine to very fine, the quarter is good. I looked on ebay, there are a handful of these sets that have sold for $7-$12. I don't think I'm loosing any value by cracking...

You all are gonna laugh at me... I got out my merc book and found the hole where the cracked out dime would live and there was a dime in that hole already. Turns out I filled several holes but forgot to update the list on my phone. I no longer have a reason to crack this set...

Lol been there done that. There's a nice app called coin collection it helps you keep track of the coins you need, it's a nice free app.

Yeah, I'm inclined to not break up sets, the only reason I thought about breaking this one is because I thought one coin filled an open slot in my dime album. As a matter of fact the only set I've cracked is a '76 proof set that went into a Capital plastics holder, and those coins are still identifiable as proof coins...

Well, I certainly have no issue breaking up proof sets. I broke all of my standard proof sets to fill my Dansco albums, but the Prestige proof sets are intact for sentimental reasons. Some sets are just meant to be for some people.

Re-visiting this one. The more I looked at this "set", the more it bothered me that the dimes were "backwards" (reverse up). I just couldn't get over that, so I freed them today. I tried to pop the case without destroying it, but I wasn't able to. The cardboard insert survived unscathed, so if I can find a new plastic case I could reassemble the set with the dimes "right side up". Or maybe I could glue the original plastic back together and paint the edges black to hide the damage... Hmmm...
