Ok so I asked what everyone's Dream coin is.

Now I want to know what your favorite coin you picked up off the ground. I don't mean metal detecting, I mean like in a parking lot or in the street. Something like that.

I know every coin collector out there can't resist picking up that coin even if it is just a penny.

Mine is a 1921 sixpence I found in a Target parking lot 6 years ago. Not worth much...but kind of unusual to find in the US. Probably confused for a dime as that is what I thought I had found when I spotted it.

What's yours and where did you pick it up at?

I eyeballed a 1962 silver quarter and 1930 Buffalo nickel on a sloping hillside next to street parking in Old Town Alexandria. A small patch of green in front of brick apartments the next time I looked it had been mulched and landscaped. No telling what a detector would find there.

I once found $80 in a parking lot. Does that count?

Several years ago I found a 1889 German 10 pfennig coin on the pavement right in front of a shop entrance. Completely black but otherwise relatively undamaged. I still wonder what they were trying to pass it for

As this is western Poland, formerly German territory, I assume such a coin would be a common detecting find. But finding it without a detector - and without digging is another story!

In early November 2014, while metal detecting several old houses that had been torn down a few blocks from my house, I looked down and saw a coin lying on the dirt. I picked it up, took it home, cleaned it up and found myself with a real nice 1900 Indian Head cent.

I didn't even need to use my detector on it.

By far my best surface find.

I have found various coins on the ground over the years.

The earliest that I can recall was an 1883 'no cents' V nickel that was eyeballed in the flower bed of one of my father's rental homes in the city about 35 years ago. I took that coin to school - showed it to a buddy in metal shop class, he says "let me shine it up" and proceeds to put it against the wire wheel!

Another was a 1972 German 10 Mark silver Olympics commemorative that I found on the pavement near a home having a garage sale. That would've been about 1976.

I still have these coins.

1921 Morgan dollar I found on the fairway of a golf course 4-5 years ago was the highlight of all my ground finds. I also got a 1958 Washington quarter in the change bin of the soda machine at work a few years ago.
