OK, here is the rest of the story. The 1924 was purchased from ebay while I was looking for a nice 1924 S for my collection. (still looking) I saw an out of focus pic, thought it might be AU/MS woodie, took a shot with the minimum bid and this is what I got. I wasn't really disappointed, as I knew I was taking a chance, and I have gotten a few nice coins this way. So I decided to use the coin as a "conserving" candidate. A soak in acetone, the some verdicare and a toothpick to see how much of the crud I could remove. Here are the pics of the coin as I received it, followed by the after pic:
