1) NEVER clean coins!
2) Find a denomination that interests you (1c, for example, is mine)
3) Research that denomination, find out key dates, varieties, and other errors.
4) Study up on counterfeits! You will be happy that you did your research in the future!
5) Buy a loupe, if you like errors. I use a Carson 10x loupe. I have found many GREAT errors with it!
6) Collect what you enjoy most! You will hear this a TON! But, it is one of the most important things you can do! I started off by collecting errors, then strayed to Morgan dollars, which were cool for a while, but then the errors ultimately won me back.
7) Collect what best suits your budget. Back to the errors and Morgan dollars, Morgans are WAYY too expensive for me at 15 years of age! I LOVE getting an attractive error for maybe $5! Collect what you can afford.
8) You aren't forced to love collecting coins. If, after a few months or years, the fire or passion for collecting has gone out, you don't have to stay. That's what happened with me and baseball cards. I loved them for a little bit, but then I got bored of them.
9) If you ever have questions, ask us! We have many "experts" here on the forum that can lead you in the right direction. They are human, however, and subject to errors!
10) If coop tells you something about a cent, you best believe he's right. He's wrong very rarely. And, if he doesn't know what's going on with your coin, he gets Mike Diamond on here (one of the Big Guys).
I hope that this is just the beginning of your coin collecting experience!
