I'm gathering up a list of great advice I've got from this forum. Anyone who'd like to post advice can, and the one with the best advice gets a roll of mixed date wheat cents. Post as many times as you want, all day every day. The contest ends in two weeks.

New collectors, or estate hauls. Do your due dilligence and research what you have prior to ANY sale of your collection. A weeks worth of on and off reading could potentially save/gain you thousands.
I'm a new collector, and thats the best piece of advice I've ever gotten!

Put your coins in albums, folders or 2x2 holders not in tin cans.

My advice to anyone that has an interest in coins, that is just beginning: Don't try to collect every coin that was issued by your country. find the denomination that interests you the most and stick with that. collect all series and varieties of that denomination. buy yourself books on that denomination, and know everything about it. be an expert on that one particular group of coins . your not doing a type set ,so your going to collect by date, mint, condition, and varity (ex.SM Ltrs ,Lrg Dt, slant 5's etc ) Some might think I'm crazy ,but if you can devote your whole life on just one denomination you can be the expert that experts go to for their advice and questions. .

Rule #1: never clean your coins. Rule #2: If you aren't sure what to do, see rule #1.
Almost without exception, cleaning of coins by the novice or casual collector is a bad idea.

Make goals and try to stick to them.
Make a budget and try to stick to it.
Make friends and stick to them.
Make a collection you're proud of, not what others might like. (My low-grade Barbers being an example)
Make it fun, and keep it safe.

My advice: Never let yourself get so cash poor that you are forced to sell your collection in a hurry. This is an interesting contest. I'm going to enjoy reading this thread.
