Hi,

I just received this 1/2 Franc coin and was wondering about the grade. Am I aiming to high when I give it a VF-XF? I purchased it with a nice 1889 1/2 Birr from Ethiopia for 30 € and think I made a good deal on this one. Even though I do not mainly collect Swiss coins I take them whenever they cross my way in a good offer and try to get every date back to 1850.

Best regards from Berlin

I think that VF is a reasonable grade, for wear. I don't know what that brown material on the coin is though. It could affect the value.

It should fill the 1898 hole until a nicer one comes along, it's VF at best, and some discoloration.

I don't see this as grading up to VF-XF hybrid, the spear is wearing into the wrist and the folds of the robe are wearing down, with some joining of the vertical striata in the shield. The back of these always looks better than the front.

Fair enough, thanks for the detailed explanation paxbrit. That makes a lot of sense to me now :)
