I have bought the Canadian Silver Maple. Has the security symbol as well as the Sunshine round with the security symbol. That way if shtf, they could be traded and with the security mark I hope will be accepted more readily than just a round. I've been burned with a silver eagle coin that turned out to be fake. Just my 2 cents.

If it were my $1000 I would wait until the price goes back down to $12 per ounce. Then I'd buy US 1964 Kennedy halves or lightly circulated Franklins.

I like that idea, however, last time silver approached $12 the premiums on 90% silver went through the roof!

Given the diversity of opinions and the unknown future, a mix of "junk" silver with a few 10 ounce bars may be an option.

It's your Father, he is not a collector, he is not a gambler, doesn't care a lick about the commodities market (nor does he want to pay 1 cent in commissions to some broker who claims to know what PM's are going to do), has no interest in following the collector coin market or pulling out his book and calculator to figure out what is "junk silver" and exactly what the going "X's" rate is.(I am assuming)

He just wants to buy something with a long term history of appreciation, with no fees and little if any premium, sit on it, and pull it out in ten years to see what it is worth. Or check one column in the "paper" to see if he is up or down.

Silver bars, 59 ounces of silver, if silver goes above $17/oz he is in the black if it is below $17/0z he is in the red. Easy-peasy no commissions, no calculations, no fuss

Something like this:
https://www.canadianpmx.com/Products/Details/189
Generic, good value, all-American...
I'm guessing this is for long-term holding...
Cheapest form is probably grains, as they are low-tech to produce. If it's silver you shouldn't care about the form unless you're selling. Search bar!

It depends on what your motivations are.

This thread is in the Forum for
Precious Metals and Bullion - Gold Silver, Copper, Platinum.

Silver rounds of whatever sort, have at least some numismatic value, and if you are strictly a silver accumulator, spending $1,000 on bar silver should be the way to go, where there is no numismatic premium.

When it comes to silver rounds, consider the resale price, because I think that most buyers from you will be offering you spot (+ or -), and not what designs are on them.

If you are a collector of silver rounds, then THAT is a very different matter. That makes you somewhat of a numismatic collector, and less of a silver investor.

Actually, copper and nickel bar is at a fairly low price just now, and probably represent the best upside prospects.
Scrap steel is also fairly good as well, with the Chinese flooding World markets; just make sure that the steel you buy is of good quality, because the Chinese are flooding World markets with poor quality rubbish, just like they do with fake numismatic material.

Thank you all for the input. I think he is leaning towards rounds and bars. Sunshine Mint seems to have some stuff he would be interested in as it seems to have very low premium over spot

Either buy bullion bars or go for junk silver coins. That's what I would do. Should get you quite a bit of silver.

A cool idea may be to get hold of 2 medals of 1 kilogram (2.2lbs) of silver, there are a few varieties to pick from. They should do around $500 each.

I would go with 5oz and 10 oz bars.

Grandson and I started buying silver last December as of today we have 35 OZ each. Our stash is made up of Sunshine bars and rounds from 1 OZ to 10 OZ from JM Bullion. We just today were able to use the eCheck option and it will speedup delivery. Our cost basis is now $15.96, so we are still up $1.00 per OZ. Webekin

Hmm... knowing me, I'd probably spend $100 on junk silver (world and US), and then put the rest into 10 oz bars.
