I am relatively new to stacking. I usually buy an ASE each week to throw in the safe.

After talking to my father today, he expressed interest in buying some silver.

I was trying to convince him to buy ASEs, but he can't get over the $3-$4 premium he would have to pay over spot. So, I suggested he do some research on rounds and bars to see if this would be a better fit for him.

If you had $1000 to spend on silver, what would you purchase given this situation? Would there be liquidity issues if he purchased generic rounds and bars?

Thanks for any guidance you can provide!

Well, the premium paid for ASEs is reflected in the selling price to a dealer.

My LCS buys any and all silver whether generic or otherwise, and there is about a 10-15% spread between buying and selling. I do not think that the % spread depends much on what they buy/ sell.

A dealer with a very Large turnover could have a smaller spread between buying and selling

The local coin shops in my area don't seem to have any reluctance in buying generic silver over the counter. One of the dealers I buy from said that he personally buys generic rounds and bars for his collection. The buy/sell spreads on ASEs to Generic are fairly similar from what I've seen.

I, personally, would buy bulk junk US silver.
Not the best bang for your buck, but you can also have a lot of fun variety searching and what not.
Rest in Peace

I'm not a stacker but If I had $1,000 to spend on silver and nothing else, I would buy no frills poured silver bars . just as long as they say how many ounces of .9999 fine silver. but be careful of scams, some just silver plate other cheap metals.

I would buy the entire Zombucks proof set. Again.
Cost would be about half.
The other $500 I would waste.

Go to your local coin shop and buy as many junk silver dimes as you can. I know my shop charged no premium on junk silver so you may be just as lucky.

There is not a dealer around who wouldn't buy them off of your Dad if he decided to sell. And if you want full (if a dealer pays less than spot) value you can always sell on Craigslist with the proper precautions, of course.

Dimes are easy to break up to sell, also. Obviously they can be broke up into amounts smaller than an ounce. ASEs and other bullion coins save space, obviously. As do junk quarters/halves/dollars. Silver dollars have experienced a spike in premiums the last few years, however.

I've found that generic rounds/bars can only reliably be offed to a dealer and not so easily sold to other citizens who may be weary of fakes and not have the knowledge/experience in determining a genuine silver round/bar.

When I have the money I have been buying 10oz bars.

I still buy a few Eagles each month but even at the coin club cash price of $3 over spot from the local distributor / member I think name brand bars are a better buy profit margin wise.

But if silver were to hit $100 an ounce it would be harder to try to unload 10 oz vs 1 oz as the common man can afford a 1 oz for the Apocalypse compared to $1,000 for the bar.
