i purchased a holed, AU 1853 gold dollar today and noticed it has the exact same lines on liberty and spot near the 'D' as Johnny54321's coin in this thread https://goccf.com/t/50445. Johnny never mentions that the coin is definitively fake but that he thinks it could be. I have a coin which is obviously from the same dies but I dont know if it is fake. I need help here to know weather to return the coin as fake or keep it. thanks, I dont have pics but my coin is fake if Johnny's is as they are from the same dies. Feel free to call me Will.

Well, John knew his gold Federal issues very well. If John said he had his suspicions, I trusted him always. Just my input.

Quote: ...a holed, AU 1853 gold dollar... A holed, AU common date gold dollar as you describe isn't worth over $100 and if you paid more than that then I'd return it regardless of authenticity.

Assuming the hole is small, that's a good price ~$78 USD. Post some pics when you can.

What does it weigh? It appears genuine at a glance and at the price you paid a contemporary counterfeit gold piece (made of gold) would be worth owning as well.

Gold value only. If it is fake and good quality jewelers copy gold, or genuine and holed, does not really matter.
Pictures suggest genuine to me. With metal removed for the hole, 1.6 grammes suggests genuine as well.
Only the 1853 with mint marks are valued at anything significant. No evidence of a mint mark near the edge of the hole.
$100 Cdn a tad too much, but if it is gold, I would now keep it anyway.

Great key fob. You'll be the only one on the block that has one like it.
Any piece of jewelry that contains 1.6 grams of 22 kt gold would be much more expensive.

Agree genuine and (to me) a tad rich for bullion.

I don't see anything that screams fake to me.
