Somebody mentioned in another post that the 1916 D Mercury dime has markers that can ID the mintmark even if the mint mark location is rubbed off flat. What are the giveaways?

If the "mintmark" is worn off flat, than it either HAD no mint mark (usually the case but try to convince a collector...LOL)or it is too worn down to see any of the usual diagnostics. SOME genuine 1916-D coins have rotated dies. That should still be visible on a very worn coin; however, w/o a trace of the "D" the coin is...cannot bring myself to say it!

Only four reverse dies were used for the 1916-D MM. They are easy to diagnose once you know what they looks like. You need to research to find them. with the power of google and the internet it is not a tall task.

Not to good a method. From my inventory of about 3,000 Mercury dimes I'd say about 20% have rotated reverses.

You are correct. That's what SOME 1916-D's means. Now, knowing that a rotated reverse is a worthless diagnostic if you cannot see a "D" - That's what I didn't wish to say. His coin is worth "melt."

You are also correct. Unfortunately the OP's coin is too worn for any diagnostic to be visible (see post about die rotation above).

Thanks for the replies. You can tell if it's a real D only by the mintmark position?
