1879 P Morgan VAM 23? VAM 44? What?

NGiles Pillar of the Community United States 527 Posts	Posted 02/17/2008 11:46 pm There aren't a lot of VAM listing for the 1879 P's. And what are there, there aren't any pictures for. This coin has the remains of doubling in the olive leaves as listed for the VAM 23. However it has vertical die gouges in the ear as discribed in the VAM 44. It also has die gouges in the hair beneath the phyrigan cap. The reverse also has the I and G in "IN GOD WE TRUST" filled in. Any ideas on what variety this could be? Olive leaf doubling as in VAM 23. Die Gouges in ear and hair. And the filled letters. And obverse and reverse. Report this Post to the Staff

If the date is not doubled, eliminate Vam23. Vam44 is listed in the updates and seems to match the coin you have. LeRoy doesn't always list all the oddities on the coin. On the 1878 alone if he listed every little thing, his book would be about five feet wide. Report this Post to the Staff
