There aren't a lot of VAM listing for the 1879 P's. And what are there, there aren't any pictures for.

This coin has the remains of doubling in the olive leaves as listed for the VAM 23. However it has vertical die gouges in the ear as discribed in the VAM 44. It also has die gouges in the hair beneath the phyrigan cap. The reverse also has the I and G in "IN GOD WE TRUST" filled in. Any ideas on what variety this could be?

Olive leaf doubling as in VAM 23.

NGiles, Vam23 also has a very noticeable doubled date which you did not mention. If the date is not doubled, eliminate Vam23. Vam44 is listed in the updates and seems to match the coin you have. LeRoy doesn't always list all the oddities on the coin. On the 1878 alone if he listed every little thing, his book would be about five feet wide.

I would be OK with a five foot wide book. I like to know all the details. I'm not too sure that LeRoy would like writing the book however.
