This is in a 2nd tier TPG regular slab. I have read that the 2nd tier TPGs may not be as stringent as NGC or PCGS, or even ANACS but I am surprised this is not a details grade as harshly cleaned. Anyone venture to grade?

Note - my mental grade when I priced it was two steps below the grade on the slab as cleaning aside I think they overgraded this.

VF-25, cleaned. I doubt that NGC or PCGS would give it a straight grade. It has too many cleaning hairlines.

It is in an ICG slab at EF-40, not details grade for cleaning for some reason. Other than the surface issues it looks more like a straight 35 to me, 30 if the grader is having a bad day but the better reverse should redeem it somewhat.

With all due respect I wish that you would look at this group of Photograde pieces and compare the VF-35 with your coin.

billjones - appreciate the link. It certainly looks 30ish compared to that. In my limited experience collecting I sort of discount photograde. There is just one example per grade and it seems like there are so many inconsistencies as you move up or down the grades for various coins. I'm basing what I think on just seeing other graded coins.

Although I am just learning so I truly appreciate the advice and especially the constructive criticism.

One more question - Are ICG so inflated where they give this a 40?

The short answer to your question is yes. Many ICG graded coins are over graded. They do get it right on some of them, but their standards are less strict than the two leading services.

What I am fighting is grade-flation. It is a trend that TPGs are using to drum up more business.

The ICG slab plus the "no details" for dipped bust coinage, (seems to be a trend lately,) is the reason I played along and went with EF40, and I was right. But yes, in reality, it's a VF details coin. Nice one though!
