I just won the 1965 PL set on ebay for less than $15 and I am looking forward to seeing what 1c variety I get.

Good price on that set! The 1c has "large bead" and "small bead" varieties. The pointed 5 is tricky to discern, but the real one has a tiny die chip at the point. There's a valuable '65 5c piece as well. The "large beads" version has a detached jewel in QE IIs crown. Then there's 5 varieties of the $1. '65 is a good year for varieties overall.

Here is the diagnostic for the 1965 "large beads, pointed 5". Not the tiny protrusion on the end of the "pointed 5": there's a die chip.

Thanks for the info. I look forward to seeing what varieties I will get. I also believe there are some varieties on the dollar coin as well.

On your $1 I think you have the SB P5 variety (Type 1), but I'd like to better see how the I in REGINA aligns to the beads.

The 5c is the small beads (common) variety. My tentative assessment of your 1c is that's a blunt 5. It's not just the point of the stroke, but the angle it takes. The pointed 5 variety has a more horizontal top stroke with a small die chip on the end. Here again, a detail of the area would help, and an obverse pic will show whether it's SB or LB.

I wish the RCM wouldn't keep changing the dies.

Well, it also means that if you know more than a dealer, you'll pick out the scarce varieties!
