Over the weekend I sorted through about 15 rolls worth of pennies I had accumulated over the last couple of years and found a few old King George VI's. The oldest was a 1939 then a couple of 1942's and a 1943. All were well circulated and probably grade about VG-8 at best. But one other find was spectacular! A 1947 with very slight wear and lots of mint lustre left in lower areas of the coin. Unfortunately I don't have a camera that can take very good pics so have to rely on my scanner. If you look at these scans, all the lighter shade areas, like in the leaf, his hair and around the lettering, is all shiny mint lustre still easily visible on the coin. I don't have much skill in grading but went by Charlton's description, and with mint lustre still visible I figure it's at least EF-40. Maybe some of those with more experience here could give me a more accurate grade?

Nice find from a roll! I find it hard to grade from any photo, but the photo + description suggests an EF40-45. Next is to find a '49 HR (A to denticles) in that grade

Very nice find indeed! From the picture I'd grade this coin at least at EF-45 if not AU-50. If the coin shows traces of red on the reverse (does it?) and the obverse isn't as dull in real life then it might grade even higher - $2 to $4 value.

LOL , wouldnt that be nice quote: If the coin shows traces of red on the reverse (does it?) and the obverse isn't as dull in real life then it might grade even higher
If by traces of red you mean still shines then yes, and it looks much better in real life than in scan. Hopefully I can get some better pics and post them. Thanks for all the replies.

Thanks Stewie...I really lucked out! Most of these were found in a huge cache of cents from the 40s. I don't quite understand how they ended up in California. That's a nice '47...keep 'em coming!

Stewie, don't get the impression that they are all over CA! Just in Kurts"s area, maybe just his "secret" shop!:-((( Dick

OK I've been playing with my camera and was able to get some fairly decent pics out of it (thanks to the photography forum.) I updated the pics here, and this is what the coin actually looks like (maybe not quite as deep a red)

Stewie, I saw the new pic. If you found that in a roll, it must have been kept safe for a long time. Looks like an AU RB coin--nice!

Stewie, I thought it was perhaps AU before I saw these these pictures. Now I think more like AU-55/MS-60. Extraordinary.
