With getting our tax refund the wife and I have decided that we each would get $100 to spend as we like. I would like to spend my on a coin or 2. I am new to collecting and have started with IHC's Wheaties and LMC's. What should I buy, I know the 1909 S VDB is out of budget but what else.

There are some nice coins that you can get from the mid 1800s I would say go with one of those. Maybe a F Trade dollar or a VF Bust Half. If you shop around there are some good deals.

Why not buy 4 boxs of pennys from bank first. Search it and reroll , sell it and then buy an 1931s or somthing your book needs. You may find an cool coin at face value before your out of money from buying that 100 dollar coin. My last 4 boxs of pennys I got an 1919d, 1930 , 1926, 1900 pennys and handfull 1940 and 1950 wheat pennys.

You can do samething and then cash the 4 boxs into bank and then buy an coin your book needs.

giving someone advice on what to spend $100.00 seems odd. as a numismatist, I have several areas of interest and might want to explore those with that $100.00 - but that's just me.

i have no idea what you are interested in, but I have a coin I will sell you - it's a 2008 Lincoln Cent ;)

You could buy your materials, such as Albums and 2x2's. Then buy a BU memorial set for $20, fill the album up. Buy 2 bank boxes and let the addiction begin :)

Otherwise, i'd say the 1931S would be a good investment, but to find a nice one would be around $130. Dont forget about the 24D, slowly going up in price. Your options are endless with even $100. Let us know what you decide :)
Rest in Peace

I recently had the same happy opportunity. My money came from Christmas bonuses, and I bought an 1842 silver dollar.

You should buy whatever pleases you.

I'm partial to a 1931-S or 1909-S Lincoln.

I dont know if I'm allowed to post this: I have several lots of coins for sale on ebay:

#140208122598 (1900 - 1908) 47 IHCs...two more days, reserve $50, no watchers/bids.

#140208282167 (1935 - 1941) 327 Lincoln Wheats (all mints), (F/VF)no reserve, three more days, one watchers/no bids

#140207820075 (1909 - 1933) Early Wheat Cents (450 coins), no watchers/bids, reserve is $112 or .25/coin

140208122362 (1865 - 1899) Indian Head cent Lot - One roll (50 coins), reserve $50, four more days, no watchers/bids

Frankly speaking, the price per coin is a steal at reserve.

Jim

If your new to collecting I suggest you spend the $100 on going to a bank and getting 2 $50 bags of cents and have fun looking through them. However, every time someone asks this question I tell them you may as well ask who should I marry, what car should I buy, what house should I buy, should I have kids, should I cheat on my taxes?
All such questions are based on what YOU like, not others.

Since you like IHCs and Wheaties, you could get the three 1909s in AU-MS for $100 or less (1909 IHC, 1909 Lincoln, 1909 VDB Lincoln). $100 would also get you a lower grade(G4-F12) 1909-S Wheatie or 1908-S IHC if you were interested in more of a semi-key date
