Picked up this 1900 O a few weeks ago. Excuse the pictures, I'm still learning lol.
Shows slight rim toning on both the obverse and reverse, and a large die crack around the rim of the reverse, which may or may not be visible in the pics.

My guess is that this photo looks like one of my smart phone camera shots before I read this:

Was my guess close?

A more representative photograph of the actual coin comparable to the ops perspective would definitely reap more accurate replies from the CCF gang.

Welcome aboard longbow.

I was able to get some better pictures, after reading the other thread, and trying a few new things.

The O Mint marks are good to practice on.

Go to http://www.vamworld.com/ This site is pretty easy to use.

But don't be afraid to ask for help from VAM section. They have helped me tremendously.

Now, the retake is a world of difference: nice job.

I realize that this is not the photography forum but if one wishes to optimize these pictures to their maximum potential, running it past the pros there would assist to eliminate the hot spots still present on these revised coin shots.

If interested, I would then simply go to:

http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...?FORUM_ID=81

and upload these vastly improved obverse and reverse photos with some specific accompanying questions.

But until then it's now apparent when it wasn't so obvious earlier that this coin possesses nice luster with shades of a telltale cartwheel effect gleaming.

If the intent is for CCF to totally discover what little nook and crannies could be hiding under this remaining glare, I suggest migrating to a more axial-focused source of incident lighting. This negligent tweak would serve to both accentuate any obscured die cracks or Cuds and furthermore cut down on the white hot spots potentially covering them.

For a starting point while mulling over the next step of branching out to a photographic thread or not, try moving the lamp(s) from a position currently closer to perpendicular to the substrate to instead an angle near 45 degrees(+ or -).

Then, to further diminish the actual x-y dimensions of those white hot spots, gradually move dual (ideally) lamps further and further away until a satisfactory diminished glare spread envelops; a smaller diameter glare spot will incrementally form as 'any' light source becomes further away from its substrate. On a side note, one can never totally eliminate a hot spot by 'only' dimming any light.

Also, various types of light bulbs will be more suitable for certain particular visual effects one desires to achieve etc...

May I also suggest delving into the merits of the freeware program, GIMP, to digitally enhance photos when physically altering them has maxed out its effects: another subject for the photography thread.

In summary, to avoid the intent of hijacking this thread I'd share these fine point details on photographic enhancements of this nature in a possible new coin photography thread created upon the OP's behalf.

Personally, I'd simply copy that new photography URL, if created, for this coin and paste it back into this thread for any interested party to further drill down in greater depth if inclined to do so...
