So I know that modern day alchemy can be used to produced a couple hundred atoms of PM like gold and that with current technology it would take a millions of years to just produce one gram of gold, but as technology gets better and creating large quantities of PM in shorter amounts of time becomes more feasible will the price of PM drop to essentially zero?

Just wondering what your guys thoughts are?

It would not take millions of years but rather millions of dollars to create a small amount of gold if leveraging irradiation. When man can safely create controlled nuclear reactions without fuel, not only will PMs drop to essentially zero but many of society's problems will be solved as well.

On second thought, we would destroy ourselves quite quickly if we get to that technology point.

In recent years they have managed to make gem quality diamonds in the lab cheaper than natural ones. However, I don't think the same will ever happen for elemental conversion; I think there's simply a limit on the efficiency with which you can do it, and that will always make it infeasible for industrial production of PMs.

Just look at the energy budget - even small differences in atomic mass lead to gobs and gobs of energy.

More likely we will mine asteroids.

@greenprint, the ultimate limiting factor in creating precious metals from other elements is the energy cost vs. the value of the precious metal. If you could somehow get "free" energy, it may be possible some day. But if energy were "free", our society would be unimaginably different, and the price of precious metals or anything else might not be very meaningful.

I think it's a matter of time.

Imagine a couple of hundreds of years ago where aluminum was thought to be very difficult to find in pure form and hence was more expensive than gold at one stage.

Precious metals are getting more difficult to mine as miners must dig deeper in the ground or there are geopolitical issues. You never know - recovery from ocean could be another option as well.
