Don't know if it has been asked yet
But if you could go back in time, to
Which era would you go and buy coins.
And which country?

Me,
America 1800

I'd go to an ice cream shop in San Francisco in 1894. :)

I would go back the US in the 1950's and buy 1794 dollars for $40. There is no need to go back to dangerous and uncivilized times. You just need to go back to before coin collecting was mainstream.

Since we are using time travel, I will just know where the major hoards and shipwrecks have been found and get to them before they were found and after they would be missed.

Free coins. Now I no longer have to worry how to buy coins in the past eras.

The problem with traveling back in time to purchase coins is that you need some sort of money to buy the coins with in the first place, and you can't use anything modern. Given the current cost of gold and silver, it may or may not be worth it to try to pay in precious metals if the coin is rare and valuable enough today.

If you're in Europe, try this:

1. Buy a lot of 1000 mark banknotes dated 1910.
(they were issued in large quantities until 1922, all with the same date, and their value in circulated condition is still minimal)

2. Travel back to second half of 1912, 1913, or first half of 1914.
(the announcement regarding the introduction of these notes appeared in December 1911 and they entered circulation in early 1912)

3. Buy some stuff and exchange the notes for gold and silver in the process.
(when buying stuff, mind how much you can take back with you so focus on small but relatively valuable items).

4. Hope nobody spots that the notes have suffixes that haven't been released yet
(avoid going to the banks - they are more likely to notice)

Notes: don't take notes with green serial number as those will certainly get you arrested (they weren't released until 1918).

Actually, you could print a bunch of paper money using modern-day printers. You just need to have the right kind of paper, artificially circulate the notes, and have a program that will automatically vary the serial numbers, and no one will notice as the replicas would be too exact for anyone of that time to question. And when they are found out, you are hopefully skipping back forward in time with your coin purchases.

If you're going to visit lots of different places and/or times (within the last 2-3 centuries), it might be a good idea to stock up on (the more modern restrikes of) Maria Theresa thalers.
After all, they are very cheap (at least, compared to other usable old money), and as long as you don't try to offer them before the 1780s, they will be accepted as good money nearly anywhere in the world (or, at least, in very many different places).

In particular, for "1800 America", they would be a very good choice of money.

If time travel was possible, there would be thousands of you guys roaming the streets looking for coins. The first few would get some deals, then the price would soar. Then somebody would get suspicious about the whole thing, what with a slightly different language, etc.

Also, do not try to visit your parents or grandparents. Remember the movie "back to the future"?

I'd quite like to go to the US Treasury in the early 1960s when you could get bags of Morgan and Peace dollars for face value!

In the future, time travel must be possible.

That's where most of the 1804 and 1895 silver dollars have gone ..

Too the future.

For me ... I think I would go to 1921 if possible stay into 1922.
Buy up all the cheap silver certificates, stop in 1960, buy older
Morgan dollars at face

Buy rolls of new coins of all denominations.
1921 Peace ... And Proofs
Possible 1922 proof Peace dollars
1921 Walkers P, D and S
1921 Mercury dimes
1921 S Buffalo nickels
1921 S Lincoln cents
1921 gold coins
1921 commemorative coins

Then start looking for all the older collectable coins you can find.
1916 D Mercury dimes
1916 Standing Liberty quarters
1916 Walking Liberty halves
1909 S VDB Lincoln's
1914 D Lincoln's
Pretty much any key date and classic proof coins.

As long as your there buy some stock in Coke Cola.

Id go back a few days & buy some lottery tickets.

Seriously though, I'd go back to the 60s & pick up key dates for dirt cheap, maybe do some CRHing while I'm at it.
Rest in Peace

Print easily accepted paper money, right paper, correct ink and printing. launder once and invest in specific companies and leave in trust to yourself. After your real birthday would be best, of course.

Your notes should be made to deteriorate, they will be exchanged and must pass the 'sniff' test before being destroyed.

Do that and I'll vote for you for President.
