While on my trip to the U of C I needed change and asked the people at the desk to change a $5....

Got this one in the handful and it really stuck out for me... Full cartwheel luster and it looks like mirrored devices on a frosted fields.

Is this SP or PL?

Only circulation strike and proofs for the loon, I think. PL and SP for 1987 where Voyageur's.
Yours looks more like this one, IMO.

It's a business strike that definitely hasn't seen 29 years of circulation... nice pocket find!
The parallel lined background can be seen on the Loon Dollar as well as other denominations of uncirculated business strikes of this vintage.

Thanks guys

It was the parallel lines that made me think a spec strike.... And I'm not really good at always telling the difference between the strikes.

I certainly thought it was cool to see such an old coin with so little wear

The parallel lines are normal for 1987 $1 coin. I had mint roll of 1987 $1 coins and all like this.
