My kids are watching the old Superman serial and there is a coin used as a prop, they've said they want one of those and now I'm trying to identify it. Can anyone help me identify this coin, there's no writing on it so that makes its origin harder. Thanks in advance.

Atom Man Vs. Superman [1950] ep01-Superman Flies Again Image search reveals a couple of Russian sites, but only describes the episode.1 - Superman Flies Again
Luthor's gangs are causing robberies. Luthor says if he doesn't get all the money in a bank, he'll use an invention to destroy a bridge, and then Metropolis. Superman helps save the bridge, then finds Luthor's hideout and arrests the twisted criminal genius. One year later Luthor is now in solitary confinement, and offering to tell the government about a new invention that combines radar and television. Criminals like "Killer" Lawson start using coin tokens that allow them to teleport short distances, escaping the police. Luthor uses a token to return to his hideout and shows Lawson a larger prototype arc machine he hopes will kill Superman, and Luthor mentions a partner called Atom Man. Luthor returns to his jail cell, while Lawson uses his human fly ability to climb a building and rob a jeweler. Lawson then teleports into a nearby van. Jimmy spots Lawson in the van and gets punched out. Lois and the police end up chasing the van, pursued by Superman. At a rural area the van stops and appears to explode.

That doesn't look like any coin I have ever seen.

@jmaxwell52, just to be clear... The image from your post is simply a still photo from the Superman episode right? You (your kids) just want to know if they can maybe get one of these movie prop coins. Unfortunately, other than potentially making your request more clear, I can't help you. It would be super-useful to know who's portrait is on the coin. Looks like a philospoher or other intellectual to me, but might just be of the show's producer or a writer.

Thanks for the warm welcome and quick replies, John1 that is the only side shown in the film.
spence, yes that is a still from the film and yes my kids are wanting to have the coin [maybe not exact prop but a similar or exact type], and yes it would be helpful to know who's on the coin...but I don't. The film is early 40's so I doubt it was specially made for it. I just figured I'd ask at a place like this beings...you guys know coins. Any help is helpful and more than appreciated.

Here is a website where someone is tracking coins that have made appearances in movies/tv. I didn't see any Superman entries on a quick glance but he may be able to assist you. http://www.brianrxm.com/comdir/cnsmovie.htm

Good work finding that - it would be neat to know if these are ever found in the secondary market.

@jmaxwell52, just a random thought for you. James Monroe tokens from a Shell Oil President's game are still pretty easy to find on ebay. It is definitely not an exact match for the prop coin in the movie serial, but might be close enough and also open up good discussions with your kids about prior presidents.

Ok so it appears the same image of Monroe was used on a coin made by Los Angeles Rubber Stamp Co. to comemorate the Monroe Doctorone. They also made money for film studios, so my chances of coming across this coin might be slim. But my hope is not lost, I may print it off onto a wooden nickel for the kids. Thanks again for all your help, I now have a clear image to work from and knowledge of what it was.
