Poll Question
I don't recall seeing this topic yet, so when you're putting your coins in 2x2s, do you put the obverse out/up, like TPGs do, reverse, or don't care?
Personally, I usually put the reverse out/up since that's where the date normally is, but, if the coin has a particularly attractive obverse I'll do the opposite. Also, when I have a number of the same coins, I'll sometimes do some of each.

Date is on the reverse. My choice as well.

I do reverse up as well because of date as SilverDon said, and because the the reverse has a design unique to each denomination whereas the portrait is found on each denomination.

Usually the reverse, but voted 'depends on the coin'.

I voted obverse. Most of the coins I put in 2x2s are not Canadian, but they all (including Canadians) go in the same way regardless of where the date is.

Like you said, unless something in particular is happening on the obverse (like an error of some sort), then it's always reverse out.

I don't understand this question. Here are both sides of a a 2X2. Does someone actually put the coin on the outside? The question makes no sense.

I'm pretty sure 'out' is the front, or whichever side you write on.

It still makes no sense to me. You can rotate the coin in any of an infinite number of positions within the 2X2, but there is no front or back to the holder, only inside in or inside out..

Okay, I consider the part of the 2x2 with the top of the staple to be up (or out) and the part with the prongs of the staple to be the opposite. Clearly this can be a problem if someone doesn't use a stapler. The part with the writing, I suppose. E.g. if they are in a box or album, the side facing you as you look at them.
Front - maybe I should've used front and back.

I use 1 1/2 X 1 1/2's, not 2X2's. As a Large Cent variety collector, I put the side out (with writing) that has the variety (usually the reverse), but the 81's, 82's & 84's have lots of Obverse varieties.

My first view of a coin in a 2x2 is the obverse no matter what the variety is. Obverse facing up and some details written on both sides.. (date and variety etc..)
For the cents..Date on both sides for quick access and then Haxby #'s and dies at the bottom along with 2011 Charlton varieties and page #'s if that also applies..
Anything of special note get added also....so not much room left when I finish with a 2x2..

Obverse up with the fold on the left side. I put coins in albums and folders this way too, the lone exception being my ATB Quarters in their Whitman's folder - reverse up.

Same here- I always put the fold on the left. I put a staple in each corner, and include on the 2x2 the date, mintmark*, denomination, country**, and variety*. *if applicable **if other than US
