I need the diameter/weight to make a final determination on the denominaition, but the obv legend is FLOR ENTIA and rev legend is S.IOHA NNES.B. It is from Firenze (Florence) in the time range of 1252-1303. If it is about 18 mm in diameter and 3.5 g then it is a fiorino d'oro, but if it is 12 mm in diameter and 0.8 g then it is a quarter fiorino. Interestingly, the smaller coin is rarer and therefore likely more valuable. Either way, you have a coin that was valued at about $700-$1000 by Biaggi in 1992. Sorry, but I can't help with current pricing.

Are we sure that it is real? All the design and lettering seems almost suspiciously perfectly formed.

@oriole, yes that is fair push-back. I'm not sure that I can offer an opinion as to the coin being real vs. fake. Nothing leaps out at me, but I am not proficient at judging this.

I'm more concerned about the very non-golden color, especially in the worn-down parts - which almost look silver.

Really not my area of collection, but I did find one on the web. Your coin looks very crude compared to a known real example.

Yeah, the lettering on this one is completely different. It's just a crude imitation.

That sort of differential in colour on a gold coin is usually a bad sign. When you have silver colour coming through on the high points it is usually silver gilt you are looking at, in this case the darker colour coming through on the high points could make it gold plated bronze. (referring to the coin above not the original coin)
