This 1853 Charlotte Mint gold dollar has an interesting twist. There is a retained Die Cud at 10 k on the reverse. Some people might mistake this as damage, but it is actually a spot where a piece is the bottom, reverse die was sinking below the coin. I have never seen another example with this feature although there had be more of them made before the die failed enough to be discarded.

So what do you think the grade is?

great coin but I think that you have a planchet flaw, not a die problem. it appears rough and lower like a lamination error and you can see what appears to be crumpling of the metal where the lamination broke off.
Feel free to call me Will.
Rest in Peace
