Poll Question
Are there enough new people coming into the hobby?

If few kids start collecting before 17 AND nobody starts collecting FOR THE FIRST TIME after say 35...

Then my premise would be, the hobby is in trouble

If a lot of people did not collect until 35 or later

Poll Choices
Did you start collecting FOR THE FIRST TIME past the age of 35?
Are you under 35, and did you start collecting before 17?
I am over 35 and have collected since I was a kid
 I started collecting between 17 and 35

Exactly dollarman, as tech savvy as kids are today, I would think EVERY young collector would be on this site.

I started maybe around age 53-54; and the older I get the more 'into it' I am. :)

To answer your original question. Coin collecting is far from dead. There are more collectors today than ever . Most just prefer anonymity. Also a lot of the younger people collecting coins are tech savvy and buy online never attending a shop , show or even a flea market.
Also a lot of coin shops have disappeared with the advent of ebay and other online resources. A lot of dealers will still attend shows on a regular basis to buy and be back home listing the next morning.
Coin collecting is evolving but hardly dying.

I started this poll after reading the thread "is coin collecting dead or dumb".

http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...0423#2197956

It made me wonder again, because I can't get my kids interested, and none of my coworkers kids collect.

All of my friends collected when I was young (6 channels on TV, no cell phones, no computers)

I find a lot of younger kids giggle or joke about coin collecting when it comes up including my own kids, except my 21 year old daughter she seems fascinated by it like I was as a kid but then again I'm always told she is a carbon copy of myself. I wasn't a serious collector tho till after 20 but I remember always stashing Ike dollars and Buffalo nickels and indian heads whenever I found them and taking out my dad's collection whenever he let me. I even remember begging my dad to drive me to the post office so I can get one of the awesome new SBA dollars when they came out I thought it was so exciting that they would actually change the coinage, tho I've no idea why the 'post office' but they must have had some kind of promotion with them but I can't exactly remember

I'm 17, started collecting when I was 9. I've gotten the reputation of being "weird" (I've always taken that as a compliment) at my high-school for it, but the history department loves me .

I'll bet the history dept loves you heavington! And yea I find this attitude a bit even amongst some adults that don't understand the hobby-I guess I just can't understand that attitude as I've always loved it and never even considered it being weird in the least bit but apparently some do..one of my brothers laughed so hard when I told him that I coin roll hunt just found it to be the weirdest, funniest things he'd ever heard of lol..my other brother thinks it's awesome and has started dabbling in it himself of late,so go figure? People laugh at what they cant comprehend, small minds I reckon...
