They gave me these nickles LOOSE and in a large sealed plastic bag. $200.00 worth is HEAVY MAN ! They said these were received in change over time and getting ready to be "sent off". First, is this a mistake not to have gotten a "rolled Fed Res. box" ? And second, which nickles should I look for to save back ? I know about Buffalo's and older and of course the "war nickles", but I don't know what other key dates or semi's to look for. Save "Anything" older than 1962 ? (GAWD ! That would be a lot of nickles !) I don't have an album for these, but may get one in the future. What years do I need to look for ? (I have the RedBook of course, but not being a nickle person......I thought I'd better ask before I begin "nickle huntin') I saw some other threads about nickles, but thought I'd ask directly. You could always put together a bunch of circulated short sets of each decade and put them on ebay. Maybe there will be some canadian nickels in there...

Eaglefoof, I'll be watching this thread to see what I should be holding on to, also. I have a whole slew of them, and no albums, yet. Maybe I should get some. Dick

ive been trying to finish my witman album, but I save anything before 1959 save dates with low mintages like 1955 p, 1958 p, any s mint and the like. Any moderate to major errors should be saved, misaligned dies show up all the time and die breaks are not to difficult with nickels. Buffalos, Wartime, Proof nickels, and V nickels should also be saved and are possible to find. Check out the 25,000 rolls of nickels forum for more ideas

Buffalo's, War nickles, and V nickles I DO know about and collect and have many of them........ I have nice collections of those Classics ! It's the OTHER ones I don't know anything about..... the average ole' nickle and what years to look for there. So "everything" before 1959 ? And should I be saving Canadian nickles too and what dates on them to look for ? Yes.... I did see that other thread.....and there's good info there, but I wanted to ask the questions from a standpoint of a "modern nickle greenhorn" though too....... for somebody JUST STARTING on nickle roll hunting. (I have no problems snagging the well known Classics....luv those !) So anyway......everything before 1959 ......... not sure if I can spot any "errors". Maybe sort out pre-59 and then go through that pile again later, while I run the others back to the bank ? good ideas making "decade rolls complete with mintmark sets"....that's interesting !

There are also some S mints from the late 60's thru early 70's to look out for.

Good luck with the nickel search!
I'm doing the 25000 roll search, and I agree with everything said above. I'm not saving the 68-70 S mints, but you don't see a great deal of them so that might be a good idea. I just recently began putting aside pre 1982 Canadian nickels, as they are 100% nickel and the metal content is worth I believe almost 1 1/2 times face. The so-called "big five" to look for are 1938d,1938s,1939d,1939s, and 1950d. I've looked through 2200 rolls and have only found one each of 38s and 39s, and none of the other three. So, those are scarce! Good luck in your hunting, and keep us all posted regarding what you find!

http://www.coincommunity.com/coin_f...efferson.aspLooking at the mintage for 1968S~1970S: 1968-S 100,396,004 1969-S 120,075,000 1970-S 238,832,004 I would probably not be saving those, either, except for potential future melt value (which could make them more scarce for collectors). I sorted the list and here are the nine Jefferson nickels (not including any proofs) with less than 10 million minted: 1950-D -- 2,630,030 1939-D -- 3,514,000 1938-S -- 4,105,000 1938-D -- 5,376,000 1939-S -- 6,630,000 1951-S -- 7,776,000 1955 -- 7,888,000 1949-S -- 9,716,000 1950 -- 9,796,000

I really need to quit starting a reply, being distracted by work, then finishing it without refreshing the thread! Coppernickeldaddy has the top 5 listed as well!

While the 68-70s aren't rare, you don't see them very often and these are among the last circulating coins from the San Francisco Mint.

It's lucky to have latched onto an assortment of this type. The coins in circulation are always more interesting than what comes in rolls.
Your best bet is to put together a set so you can see which coins are tough and which aren't. It also make a good reference set for searching varieties.
Try to find the best made examples with the least amount of wear.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Okay.....with what time I had last night, I searched "maybe" about 1/4 of the pile. Well first of all ....... should I be saving the 1982 p&d and the 1983 p&d ? Why does the RedBook put such a value on these ! I found a whooooollllle bunch of ones from those years ! I found two "s" mints I found a couple of 1939 and one 38 and two 1941.....& late 50's.... SORRY ! ..... I will be more specific, search up to about 3/4 of the bag, and write these down tonight and bring the report into the office here tomorrow. But, no war nickles or anything exciting yet ! About those 82's & 83's though ? keep Canadians too ?

Eaglefoot, My first box of nickels, I found 3 Buffalos and a Canadian cent. My second box, one more Buffalo and another Canadian nickel. It's fun searching through the rolls (I'm getting my 10X Loupe today).. My 2 boxes of Halves are coming into the bank today...I'll be doing those for a week or two..........then back to nickels !
I am curious too about all those 82's and 83's .. I find lots of those too and I wonder if I should only save the best ones.
Good luck and happy hunting !! Laura

In '82 and '83 there were no mint sets issued thus there are not many quality coins around for that year. Also there seemed to have been some poor quality production during that time therefore making quality coins scarce. I would definately put the canadian coins aside and get a Charleton and check for any varieties.

So......'82 & '83's should NOT be saved unless one finds an amazing conditioned coin ? Average conditioned ones should just be pitched back then ? Because, I have a feeling that I could end up putting together 10-20 rolls of those years in average to poor condition......... but if no one would ever want these, then it'd be a waste of time to do that, in your opinion ?
