I finally settled on a plan for my next major collection.

I had the idea to collect "nickel coins of the world" or coins that had a face value of 1/20th of the base unit of a particular country. I soon found that this would be possible but a bit impractable. My plan is to store these coins in a blank Dansco nickel album and customize it according to my collection. I soon found out that not all 5 "cent" coins are the same size. this presented a problem. I am not at all fond of having a collection in 2x2's and stored in a three ring binder. I know this works for many of you but it just does not appeal to me.

I put this whole idea on hold for a while and didn't really think about it much.

I visited a LCS the other day (my sanctions have been partially lifted but my wings have been severely clipped). I presented the idea of a nickel size (21.2 mm) world coin collection to the owner. He thought this would make for a great collection as this is a common size for a coin. I was so happy about this I started right away and bought a 1922 Canadian 5 cent coin, I don't know much about it but I guess I will learn. I also went searching through my scrap coin pile and found two more coins that are this size. I know some of you want pictures so I will hopefully have some time tomorrow night to take them and post them. Maybe someone out there can tell me what they are and fill in some details for me.

So, what do you think about my idea? Am I up in the night or am I going to have the coolest collection in the world? Or maybe somewhere in between.

I am mostly interested in 20th century coins but I will most likely stretch it into late 19th century and include 21st century coins also. This will take me years to accumulate so I will post my progress from time to time rather than keep this thread alive for way too long.

Any ideas from anyone about which coins to include is most welcome. Thank you and good night!

Oldephiram: as long as you enjoy the search and acquisition it makes sense to me. It will be interesting to see what you find (pics) from the inexpensive to the unaffordable. Keep us posted.
