I kinda pondered this as it was part of the creation of the creation of the US birth of the country's money. Shall we open the opportunity to possibly To Rebuild the Original mint building exactly the way it was when it first was erected.
So do we have a interest ? Shall it be done? And how soon can we have it done?

Some guy in China is already building one. He plans to mint coins and be able to say they come from the Original US Mint. probably already has the US trademark and Licensce for it.

So when someone says his coins are counterfeit he will be able to say " Coin made at Original US Mint, we make coin goodly."

while it would be interesting to see the history I would say my interest level is low to actually rebuild it. Also this topic should probably be moved to the main forum.

The coins are what helped build the fledgling republic, not the building. When it's gone, it's gone, and certainly not worth the money to recreate it.

I don't kow how much interest you would find in such a project. There was no interest in it back in the early 20th century when Frank Stewart tried to get people to save the actual first mint. He couldn't drum up support so he finally tore it down.

Not with taxpayer dollars. I'm a diehard coin collector but I cannot condone governmental waste.

Ok so a got a solver dollar as a donation as a starter--- Building can be a dream but if u put your mind to it -- we can build it as great a humble as it was in 1793. I would like to see the exact stone by stone rearected --- this part of history has to be seen in person--- its what made us independent and how important of a monument is that. Every one would flock to see this ! Yes - I know¥

If it's a building with architectural significance or interest and/or if there's any societal relevance for re-building it, then I'd say it may be worth the effort. Otherwise, I think the building should be fondly remembered for the stuff that was created there, not for the place itself, as a rebuilt mint probably would not be on the exact same spot in the exact same context and will always be, well, a replica.

So, while we are not rebuilding this mint, we should also dispense with the cents. Yeah, I went there.

Kidding aside, I do not see any good reason to rebuild it.

And, in line with jbuck, KILL the cent and the nickel. We need someone to rein-in the government. It's out of control with waste and fraud. I used to think all those militia guys hiding in the woods were a bunch of crazies. As I've grown older, I now see their point....we have a federal government completely out of control. Exactly what the framers of our constitution DIDN'T want! And I guarantee, they wouldn't condone spending the money to rebuild an old Mint for tourists.

No one in this thread has suggested that it be rebuilt with taxpayer money. (Except 732amran in his second post, and it appears that he was not being serious in that post. See the smilies in that post.)

I do not care from where the money is obtained, I do not see any good reason to rebuild it.
