I have a coin that I feel strongly about, enough to be willing to spend the $100 or so it will cost all in - to resubmit.

The coin is in an NGC slab so I would send it in under their Regrade service. My question is - do they only reslab it if it grades higher? What happens if they now think it is a lower grade? Will they crack it and reslab it at the lower grade?

Great question. I'm in the same boat with a NGC graded coin.
The coin is a Wheat cent with a MS 66 RD grade but a known Variety.
This may be a different question than the OP.

Confirmed by NGC:

1. When coins are sent for a regrade, they are taken out of the holders and put in a new holder with a new certification number.

2. If an NGC graded coin is submitted in the NGC slab for regrading and the new grade is lower than the original NGC grade, the coin would be eligible for the NGC guarantee.
