Hey everyone picked this up for $360 yesterday it's my third half eagle. This one is in much better shape them the other I'm guessing it's around au58 and Ms. But I don't have lot of experience with them so your opinions are appreciated. I think I got a good deal what do you think$ *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by Justinwd 05/19/2016 10:47 pm

They're one of the toughest designs to grade. I don't have experience with them.

It looks genuine. I can't tell if there is wear or not. The places to look are the Eagle's shoulder and the Indian's cheek.

I'd say the coin grades between AU-58 and MS-62. It depends upon how "gray" the coin looks on the Indian's cheek bone. By "gray" I mean a break in the luster. The detail on the wing suggests that it is a Mint State piece. The many small marks prevent it from going very far up the MS scale if it is MS.

High end AU or low end MS. Only one way to find out for sure....send it in for TPG'g. Good luck!

Thanks for your comments, I thought it was high au or low ms. I'll probably end up sending it in to be graded.

I agree with Bill it's basically a slider anywhere from Au58-ms63

Same here, but leaning toward 58 just because of the field marks. Nice coin, tough to call without a sense of possible luster breaks.

gold can be tricky to grade by pic. I think it's AU58 but the lighting could look like slight wear. if thats the case MS63 would be a good number. tilt the coin back and forth and look at the shoulder of the wing just under the neck, the highest tail feathers and on the feather tips on the obverse to look for dullness where wear would be apparent.
