Someone just introduced me what to look for on Mercury dimes to ID split bands and I would like to get some consensus agreement from CCF readers on:

1) what are the most sought after years and mint marks in order of values for split band dimes?

2) why does one year command a higher premium compared to other years even though the grade may be the same for all of the split band years being compared?

3) the following ebay URL is a split band with the middle one not being totally separated.
a. why does this coin still qualify as a MS 64 if the middle band appears not to be separated as a result of some type of wear?

I have always understood that for 'any' coin to qualify as even a MS 60, no wear can be present whatsoever.
b. what makes this coin not have wear on the middle band?

4) and how can one distinguish (w/o sending it in to a TPG) between a poorly struck SB vs a worn 'SB'?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1918-D-Merc...182133182052

I'd like answers to all four of the above inquiries.

thx

Lets see if I can clarify some of your questions .
I would have to say the most sought after common date Merc. in FSB is the 1945-P . It is a rarity , I far as I know the reverse bands just weren't struck up at the Phily mint in 1945 . other dates sought after are the obvious 1916-D , 1921-P , 1921-D . there could be more . hopefully Coop will come in and tell you about more Merc. dates & MM for FSB .
Like I said it's a true rarity for the 1945-P to show FSB .So a 1942-D MS-66 fsb would be worth considerably less than the MS-65 45-P fsb .
a Merc. doesn't have to have FSB even if it's graded MS-67 Or 64,or 68 it's an added bonus that would give your coin much more value. the 1918-D is a gem but the center band is not split because of wear . It's because of strike .
The answer to your last question : you should be able to tell the difference between wear and poor strike .If it was wear other parts of devices would be worn also. it will take a little time ,but after a while you'll know the difference.

I believe the 1926 S is a toughie.

Right off from top of my head, besides the 45-P is the 19D, 25D and the 39S, try and find them in grade 65, even the lower MS grades are tough to locate.

These dates and others has weaker center reverse strikes that command a solid premium, the bands are most likely to worn first after numerous striking.

I'm not an expert on these but will pass on what I have in my image files.
All coins can grade over MS-60 without FSB/SBs. If the strike is right, then it will qualify. But the FSBs maybe be cause more from earlier die strikes, more than the strike itself. IMOHO That would allow die state more of the reason for these. I've not see that printed anywhere though. But looking for this in a search I will try to see if that is the case. (some time in the future) (a search for images of reverses on HeritageCoins.com is where I would search first)

The years will a lower mintage is probably the most desired as mentioned before. But it seems that the 1934 forward coins that rolls were saved. Price guides for rolls are listed from that year forward. So saving rolls may have become a more popular idea from that time forward? The more rolls saved, the better change of higher grade FB/FSB could make these an easier find.

What to look for on them?

AN image I saved from where(?) I don't remember now. But a drawing that I enhanced a bit.

Split bands:
Mercury-Dime-Split-Band-Qualifiers
Appears to be an earlier die state coin.
Mercury-Dime-Split-Band-Qualifiers
Looks like a later MDS die state coin.
Mercury-Dime-Split-Band-Qualifiers
Note this one is in LDS?
Here are two more. 1916-D and 1917-D:
Mercury-Dime-Split-Band-Qualifiers
Again note the 1916-D appears to be LDS.
The 1917-D looks more like a late EDS.
Full Split Bands:
Mercury-Dime-Split-Band-Qualifiers
Looks like an LDS example.
Mercury-Dime-Split-Band-Qualifiers
Looks like an EDS example (toned).

So I see now that there are examples from different die states that are FB and some FSB. So it maybe more of a case of good strike and very nice dies. Maybe the hubs were in better shape on some dies that made the cent bar show a better split. But they are harder to find when going through a lot of Mercury dimes.

One I sold in the past:

One I bought off ebay years ago:

I hope this helps a bit.

Nice images Coop!

I never bother saving images for my reference, got so used to seeing these all the time and not bother with it anymore.

@mdpmedia,

That seller ebay coin shouldn't bother with stating partial split band, because most of the MS one's has the top and lower bands split. Its the center band one that the TPG look at first.
