I inherited a 1958 "shifted D" penny and cannot find any information on it by googling it. The D appears under the 9 in the date, and not between the 9 and 5 as in others. Can anyone provide any insight to rarity or value? Thanks.

to CCF. As long as the mint mark is under/beneath the date it is within mint tolerance.

There is a RPM that year that kind of looks like what you are describing: 1958D-1MM-017

Note how it looks like it is behind the 9? Does it look like this one? If not, please add an image. We would love to see what you are looking at.

The mint mark is definitely under/beneath the date as John1 stated. I know nothing of coins but this came in a book and was labeled as a shifted D. Thanks for all the input, it is really appreciated.

They are hand punched. So the location of the mint mark is acceptable. Not touching the date and east of the bust. They were hand punched until 1990 when the mint mark is part of the dies design.
