I bought this 1988 proof for melt. Was wondering if the hairline scratches could be a result of anything other than post mint damage. Is it possible that they are polish lines?
I doubt it, but find it interesting that they don't seem to appear on the devices, only the fields.
Thank you for your help.

What a shame! It looks like it was wiped with the toilet paper they stock at work.

At least you got it for melt.

Impaired proof, unfortunately. Still worth something, but that depends on the buyer's opinion, not that of the seller.

You don't get a 'nearly proof', or 'about proof' coin.

With proof grading, it is the quality of the strike that is considered.
Rest in Peace

That's a shame -- I doubt that the coin had much more than dust on it and somebody got careless.

Still -- it's a nice coin considering you got it at melt. I probably would have bought it -- hard to pass up at melt.

I usually value impaired proof coins fairly kindly.

My problem is that I have never been very interested in any proof coin struck in large commercial quantities for the collector market,
except
that as in this case, that they can be bought for near melt, as this coin was.

Under the circumstances, a good purchase.

Out of curiosity - what would a coin like this grade? Would it grade less than PF60 or would it still a 60+ grade but designated as "details"?

I got 3 more impaired proofs from a pawn shop for $8 each. That's well below melt.
They were 1986 statue of liberty x2 and 1991 mt Rushmore.
I love pawn shops.

Proof 60 details, improper cleaning. No actual wear so it shouldn't drop below 60.
