This a circulated counterfeit 1836 Mexico (federal) 1/4R state copper. Weight 5.95 grams, compare to genuine one at 6.65 grams which indecently came from the same dealer a year ago. Also take a look at Don Bailey DB1060 page 74.

I picked it up last weekend at a coin show for $5. Currently my favorite coin.

The real one is the first two images, the counterfeit is images three and four. The eagle on the counterfeit looks pretty good, at least compared to the Bailey image. Wonder if someone grabbed a die or punches.

I'd sure like to see both of these analyzed via XRF to find out if that weight difference can be accounted for owing to differing compositions.

It'd seem the counterfeit served in commerce for a long time before (or without) being detected.

I have to say your genuine specimen is gorgeous.
