Wow, congratulations to you! Life became too busy for me, so I am not lookoing through nickels at this time. I may again pick up where I left off when life slows down a bit because I truly do enjoy the "hunt".
My hat is off to you.

Rackster, I remember my first 1939-D Jefferson. It was many tears, (NO. KEEP that slip) YEARS ago! My father had some pocket change and pronounced it to be a 1959-D. BUT, his greedy son, whose eyes were sharper, saw that it was the 1939 and quickly put it into HIS folder. And now, as my eyes are less keen, I can understand, better understand, what dad must have felt.
Coins are now, and have been since my last participation in the CCF back in August, totally off my radar. Your story has proded me to respond in an attempt to jump start my further participation in this wonderful group of coin people.
May I?

Just stumbling on this thread now... Congrats on your 39-D! I've found one in all of my years of searching - 30 years ago!

Congrats on completing your set. I have 6 sets only held back by one empty hole the elusive 1950D. When I find a 1939 which seems to be 1 in every 2 boxes I almost cringe when I see a mintmark because I know there is no chance of it being a doubled die. How twisted after years of CRH is that

Thanks Jack; you've been very successful at snagging some awesome coins. That 50D is a tough one. Both of mine had to be liberated from a collection and sadly, one has a bit of roller damage on the reverse. But it's an AU coin by all other accounts. Working on sets 3 and 4 and missing the 39Ds and 50Ds. Also, both are missing the 43Ds. Tough coins to find...especially on the East Coast. But when you do, it's time for a happy dance. Now John and a couple other hunters are closing in on the milestone. They are keeping up a pace like you used to do. Lately though for me, I've been sorting and organizing. While I chased that 39D, I accumulated a hoard to sort through for varieties and a few hundred in nickels that need to be returned to the bank. I haven't done a box in a couple of months. And I still have a search going on $40 of CWR of cents...5 months and counting. I need more time! Still, it feels good to have put a circulated set together. Exciting it still can be done.

Still, it feels good to have put a circulated set together. Exciting it still can be done. It's so exciting indeed, Rackster! I think Jack may very well be the "Gold Standard" when it comes to CRH and finds. Almost 30 years ago, I put that first set of mine together in 2 1/2 years as a cashier at Taco Bell... I had no idea this kind of stuff was even out there today. And If I hadn't had such a hard time finding 2009-dated coins when I started looking for them in change late last year, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. Searching for those coins (especially the nickels and dimes) is what got me into CRH... I ran into two exciting LOOMIS boxes over the past two days... one with 170 pre-60s including a 38-D (I got 44 of the 50 rolls from this box, BTW), and the second box which contained that 39-D and also a 38-S amongst its 37 pre-60s. When all is said and done, I'll do an analysis of these two boxes and any subsequent ones my bank might have from this batch... Given that there were no silver coins amongst them, I'm assuming someone collected these coins over a very long period of time - maybe 20 years+, while culling the silver out. I say this also, because there were also lots of Uncirculated coins minted in Philly from 1956, 1959, 1960, 1963, 1964, 1967, along with Unc. 1970-S coins, and lots of Unc. Denver coins from the early-mid 1970s in them. I'm thinking they may have moved and took the coins with them. I'm hoping to buy another box (or two) tomorrow from there. Being on the West coast, I have some trouble with the Philadelphia coins. The same kind of trouble I'm sure you have with the San Francisco coins, though to a lesser extent. Denver coins are usually not that tough for me, but I've only found one each of the 43-D, 50-D, and 55 Philly nickels in my lifetime. And I've never found a 1954 Philly Lincoln in circulation. Up until a couple of months ago I had only found one 50 Philly nickel ever, until two just happened to show up about a week apart earlier this summer. I hope you can find some more time... and that you can complete more sets as well! Good luck!

Thanks, jbuck! In the past week many nickel milestones have been hit and records have been broken... I have found my most valuable coin ever (this pristine 1939-D), my most pre-60s from a box (170), and in a week (315), and my oldest coin ever - an 1887 V nickel.

Just now reading this thread. I do find it amazing that a set of Jefferson's can still be put together from roll hunting. I am sure it takes a lot of time, effort and luck. But always a good feeling to complete a set ---------------------------------- I do have to think about the years I have worked at coin shops. The many times buying Whitman folders of Jefferson nickels, taking out the War Nickels and the 1950D's and dumping the rest. If the pre 1942's were AU/BU would pull them to 2X2. Maybe some of these boxes you all are finding are from dealers dumping nickels. Dealers will build their stock so far and then either not buy the coins, or dump them after picking out coins they feel they can resell. Many coin shops will have rolls of 1939 D nickels. along with rolls of 1909 Lincolns, 1883 V nickels, 1938 D Buffalo and 1938 D Half dollars. ------------------------------- Thinking of all those nickels I helped dump over the years. I am now wishing I had looked through them and put the better dates away.

But always a good feeling to complete a set Indeed, GR58! What got me back into CRH was the trouble I was having finding 2009-dated coins in circulation. I had no idea that this stuff was still out there, and that a Jefferson set out of circulation was still a possibility. I like to say "I make my own luck" sometimes... when I realized what I had found in that first box, I realized there may be more boxes from that batch out there so I bought up EVERY LOOMIS roll they had! Sadly for me, there was only one more of those LOOMIS boxes, but it proved to be very fruitful! ---------------------------------- Quote:I do have to think about the years I have worked at coin shops. That's cool that you've had the opportunities to work at coin shops. As for those two boxes, given the facts that there were so many BU coins (over 40 of them) from such a long period of time (1956-1979), and because I found that AU 39-D, an XF 38-D, an XF 38-S, and three Buffalos as well, I'm thinking these likely weren't dumped by a dealer. My best guess is that this hoard was from someone who collected Silver coins and just tossed the non-silver ones into perhaps one of those 5 gallon Sparkletts bottles over a 25 year or so period. The overall quality of the coins was also much higher than you would typically find CRH. Very few coins are in the Fine or lower range. The vast majority grade VF or XF. Regardless of how these coins got to me, I'm just very thankful I happened to be in the right place at the right time, and kept my head about me!

Maybe my turn will come too! Thanks, DCM Coins! It only took me 6 months to find my first "Goldmine." I'm sure there's got to be others out there!
