This is a harshly cleaned/polished Trade dollar, purchased at auction about 30 years ago. I believe it is genuine--it has the correct weight, and it appears to be a type I obverse and reverse. I'm no expert in Trade dollars, and I'm wondering if anyone sees any obvious concerns (other than the signs of cleaning) before I send it in to get authenticated.

It looks good to me. I would send it in for grading.

Looks good to me. But don't send it in because it will surely come back at AU details, cleaned.

I would send a AU Details cleaned 1874 S Trade dollar because it will have a value in a holder around $225 to $250. Trade dollars are notorious for being counterfeit and It would be easier to sell in a genuine holder. There are a lot of AU detail Trade dollars in holders and they do seem to sell in the market without much trouble. If you are not going to sell the coin, then there is not much value in getting it in a holder.

That was my thinking. I'm planning to sell the coin, and I figure it will be more marketable in a TPG genuine slab. Thanks.

Agreed, the only reason to slab this coin is because if you don't you will scare off too many potential buyers that don't know what they are buying.
