I'm a newbie and I feel stupid now. Yeah, I bought the Presidential dollar set from HSN last week. I was just surfing and I saw Coin Collector on the listing so off I went. There they were. They were so beautiful! I had consumed a couple of glasses of really good single malt scotch, it was my birthday the next day and I thought, "what the heck?" they look beautiful! Yes I paid too much. Yes I got taken in by the "Reverse Proof" exclusive to HSN!! hoo boy do I feel stupid. Anyway they arrived today. THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL! The presentation is superb. A Nice Red Oak box with glass top. All the 2007 Presidential dollars from each mint are in individual airtights including the proofs and the (Yes they are beautiful also) Proprietary Reverse Proofs. They look great. The 2008 are on auto ship. I will over pay for them and I will receive their Really nice looking red oak display case with black velvet lined drawers that will hold the entire collection through 2016. I am thinking I should cancel the auto-ship after that and just fill it with coins from the mint afterward. What is up with the "proprietary reverse proofs"? I feel dirty. Advice? Pokes? Laughing behind my back?

You have joined a very exclusive club now by overpaying for something then regretting it later. Welcome to the Coin Community Family! We all have done it at one point or another. How much did it cost ya? And as always....Got Pics?

Yes, you have been initiated into this group just like so many others before you. I would guess that almost every collector at one point or another has bought something and paid too much for it. Hopefully you won't do this too often. Get some books (Redbook, ANA Grading Standards, etc) and learn as much as you can. Keep those coins and look at them often...they will help motivate you to make educated choices.....and like you said "They ARE Beautiful Coins"

Don't sweat it. I don't know how many posts I've seen where someone proudly posts some pics of a great deal he got from the local coin show.
By the end of the thread, it wasn't MS-64, it's AU-58, it's been cleaned and a couple members even doubt whether it's real!
Or how many times when we leave the local coin dealer and close the door, we hear muffled guffaws and choking sounds coming from inside the shop.
As GO said, It's part of the initiation.
You may want to rethink whether you want to continue it. And I believe they have a return policy.

So the "Proprietary Reverse Proof" is bunk isn't it?
I will get the 2008's and the big red oak box. Then get the First Spouse coins for the slot reserved for the "Proprietary Reverse Proof".
Whaddya think? Or is the box just not worth it?

I don't think it's worth $80 bucks now...maybe $50 on ebayBut in 5...10...15 years it might get some serious premium being in a full set like that

If I got a dollar for every time I overpay for a coin, I'd have another 1909-S VBD by now

1sekivo said, " If I got a dollar for every time I overpay for a coin, I'd have another 1909-S VBD by now" yeah, that !! (and if I took all the money others paid me above value for the coins they've just HAD TO HAVE (more than the next buyer) that I've sold on ebay, I could buy one, too) I wonder if I should start being more altruistic and tell bidders, "wait, dont bid higher, i'll sell it to you now at the current bid"

Mark, first of all, don't feel stupid. We have all paid too much for coins at some time or another. I have to say that the reverse proofs are beautiful. I'm a real sucker for them. Did you pay too much? Probably. Will the set increase in value? Maybe. I don't know what's going on with the Proprietary Reverse Proofs, but who knows what will happen with the market? This is not like the gold washed State Quarters that they were touting for such a long time. Also, the ANACS submissions are nice to have. I personally prefer ANACS. When all is said and done, I don't know that you necessarily overpaid by that much. In your position, I would keep the set. It's an attractive set and would look great on display.

Ima hafta say: possibly after production, material, and administrative costs, you paid three to four dollars a coin. Upon reflection (and upon mirror reflection of such beautiful coins), all in all, you got something very beautiful indeed.
