I have recently received some proof coins which I wish to place in my whitman albums. My question is, how would one do this without fingerprinting or otherwise damaging the proof coins?

I've been doing that for a long, long time. Really no problem. Hopefully your saying album, not folder. Just slide the plastic piece top and bottom, out far enough to insert the coin. Take a coin a little bigger than the one your attempting to use. In other words a nickel if your discussing a cent album. Push into the slot a little and turn in order to enlarge the hole. Not a real lot but enough to make your proof fit. Now remove the proof from whatever it is in and holding by the edge, place into the slot. Probably should now just fall in. For some reason Whitman makes the slots for Proofs a little to small. A little bit of trouble but works well.

Also, I use white cotton gloves. Very cheap insurance.

You can put another circulated cent in the hole first to size it ,, and once it is sized for the coin ,,remove the circulated and if you have any 2X2's for quarters or half dollars cut one in half ,, lay the proof carefully where it goes and place the 2X2 window over the coin and press it in .

Maybe I got lucky, or maybe they just made them differently when I bought them (late 80's early 90's), but most of my Dansco albums are loose. Most of my coins, including proofs, just dropped in. Actually, I often have the problem that my coins spin around over time!

Back to question at hand...

My two albums that are tight are the Roosevelt dime and Statehood Quarter albums. I am able to get them in by dropping one edge in first, then applying light pressure on the opposite edge using a soft cotton towel or the 2x2 method mentioned by Metlman (assuming the coin came in a 2x2, of course!)

They are not really that tight, more snug, nothing like the Whitman folders! They took little pressure to coax them in. Just be careful, take your time not to let the cloth or mylar slide (and possibly scratch) the coin. Patience is a good thing!

I think the advice of "sizing" the hole with a "throw away" coin would maximize success.
