I picked up some coins that were in holders with certificates by the American Heritage Mint. If I was interested in reselling some of them, are they worth more in the holders, or is it OK to break up the sets?

IMHO,there are only three TPG's: PCGS NGS ANACS. I put no added value to a coin in a American Heritage Mint holder.

Check the market price of equivalent coins before buying.
With numismatics, always do your research before deciding to buy.
If you buy something that has been heavily marketed, you will have to pay the marketing fees that have been built into the purchase price.

I prefer to scour the dealer's junk bins instead. I love the thrill of the hunt - much more fun!

If you want to sell them, leave them intact. Let the buyer worry about the whether or not they want to leave them in the holders.

Leave it up to the buyer of your set if they want it or not.

I personally don't add much value to such certificates. If you follow the link by 999fine, you'll see that they basically only state that they believe their coin or coins are 'collectible', whatever that may mean. My garbage is also collectible according to the trash collector... once a week to be precise.

I have experience with a similar kind of marketing machine in Norway. They sell you coins with a lot of paperwork, but at the end of the day, to real numismatists, they just ruin old (silver) coins by cleaning them. Worst is that they are expensive, too. Anyway, according to their own certificates, they don't necessarily sell (valuable) coins at competitive prices, they sell 'samleglede', or 'the joy of collecting' for overpriced stuff.
