Poll Question
Fun idea for a thread: How many coins do you own that you have never physically touched? Examples would be coins that you have never removed from their: - Slabs - 2x2s - OGP - Otherwise encased or encapsulated setting I have always been a sucker for raw coins, and own very, very few coins in anything resembling MS 65 or higher. The biggest portion of these coins by far is a run of mint/proof sets that I bought last year when I first started on ebay. Aside from that, I do sometimes get coins on ebay or elsewhere in 2x2s that I am happy with how the info is written on there, so I never spring them out. I own exactly four slabs--three State Quarters in sample slabs and a 1967 UK penny, all from a coin show as a freebie for YNs. Probably the most exotic example I own is a set of 8 BU 1959 cents in a paper weight apparently given out as a promo that year. How about you? I am curious to see how the distribution plays out. I decided to go with percentages rather than numbers, since there are members here who own fewer than 100 coins, and some who own tens of thousands.

I have a few proof sets and 3 or 4 ASE that I tried to get them out of the airtight but the coin seems stuck in there for the reset of its life. Does coin albums that came with coins when I bought it counts?

I've got a few different proof sets in the OGP, including the 4-coin proof and 2-coin uncirculated Kennedy set from 2014. But the most unusual things I own are a 1961 proof set encased in a Lucite cube ( inherited from my grandfather) and a smaller Lucite block with a cents and nickels I picked up in a Vegas gift shop a few years back. I also own a set of 5 1974-dated cents encased in a Lucite block which were made to look like aluminum cents. Obviously fake but still eye-catching.

Less than 10%. I have some OGP sets that will remain intact, for either sentimental reasons or because I bought them for their subject. I do have one slabbed PCGS coin thanks to Trout. It will remain intact, as he was kind enough to also send a "raw" one for my album.

Most of my slabbed coins are from submissions that I have sent into be graded myself But I have bought quite a few and these I have never actually touched. 99.99% of my other coins have been removed from the OGP and are in my albums, The only coins still in the OGP are spares. Overall I only have about 1% of my collections in slabs, The rest are Raw in saflips or 2x2's

11% or more of my coins are probably proof coins, or coins I received in 2x2's and then sold before I put them in my own 2x2s. I also have a few slabbed coins.

All my raw coins get touched moving them from the dealer 2x2s to the Quadrum holders I use. Still I voted 25-50% because of Proof sets or other OGP coins and certified coins. Heck, my Proof State Quarter set (including the territory set) consists of 56 quarters alone. I also currently own 39 certified coins that I bought as such. So, it doesn't take much to make your collection "untouchable" nowadays I guess!

About half my collection is raw, the other half are in 2x2s. Only a tiny fraction of my coins are in government-issued packaging or some other "official" wrapper. The only slab I own is a PCGS sample slab.
Of the coins in 2x2s, about half are still in "original dealer packaging". Of that fraction still in ODP, only a tiny fraction would ever have been taken out by me for some reason and put back in.
So on that basis, I'd reckon just under 25% of my collection has "never been touched by me".

With many proof sets, ASE, commemorates, and slabs I would have to go above 10%

Most of my collection is assorted low-end coins from very cheap junk bins. I also prefer being able to touch my coins, or at least look at them very closely with my extremely nearsighted eyes (which isn't always possible with 2x2s) - and this "looking very closely" is often part of my purchasing process, which means that even many of the better coins are raw (it helps that my idea of "better coins", in this meaning, is less about grade and more about rarity - at least, type rarity). However, if it's in a 2x2 when I buy it, 90% of the time it stays in a 2x2 - because I probably won't be able to get it back there if it comes to that, and the preservation is much better. (OTOH, if it's raw when I buy it, it stays raw - I've never inserted a coin into a 2x2 that wasn't its own originally.)
I've only ever removed, I believe, 5 coins from their 2x2s; three of them because their 2x2s broke and the coins slipped out (and I put them back in anyway before putting the broken 2x2 in a barely-fitting ziploc), one because its 2x2 was clearly going to break anytime soon - I regret that one, incidentally - and one because I couldn't make anything resembling a photo through the particularly awful plastic (and wanted to be able to identify that ancient coin).
I also have one set (Israeli) in what I suspect is OGP (complete with what looks like PVC damage), and one weird German "set" (more of an assortment) in a weird multi-piece plastic holder (that I probably could've screwed open, but I'm worried about losing the coins). Might have a few other encapsulated coins too. No slabs, but only because I can't afford any. I'd love to get some, but they tend to go for high money.
End result: I'd say 1-10%, because there are just so many raw coins, but it's probably closer to the upper end of that range (there are certainly dozens of 2x2s in there, many of them with uncirculated-looking coins).

25-50% here. I have lots of "from circulation" collections but I do buy the annual mint sets and various other stuff that hasn't been out of the OGP capsules.

I have a few ASE Proofs that I have never taken out of capsules, as well as some graded coins. Since I wont break a coin from a reputable slab I have never touched any of these.

The coins I can think of I have nevet touched are: - 2011 ASE- 2015 AU Koala - 2000 "Last Gulden" silver issue - 1921 1 Penni, Finland (still red, unc) - 1956 200 Markka, Finland (blast white, without toning) - 1946 Booker T Washington Half Dollar, encapsulated since the day I bought it - 1969 US proof set - 1968 Israel uncirculated souvenir set This probably corresponds to less than 1% of my quantitative collection. Few coins rest in flips but I have a fair amount of uncirculated coins.
