I recently came across this coin set in a chain with the following hand written note from my grandfather. It was in a box that I've just opened 20 years after his death. Does anybody have an idea as to value and or where to sell it?

It is not a coin-it has no denomination or country.

If that were mine I would not dream of selling it.

It isn't a coin. It is, as the note describes, a "box". It is hollow, with enough room for a single silver-dollar-sized coin inside it; we can't tell from the pics if there's still a thaler in there. If you can't figure out how to open it, try taking it to a jeweller or antiques dealer.

Here's another old forum thread with a thaler box, this one made in the design of an actual thaler. You can see from the pics of it opened up that it isn't actually made out of a coin, as the inside of the box shows a mirror-image-incuse design.

As for the value of your piece, it's a piece of jewellery, not a coin (though it is certainly numismatic-related), so you'd probably get better information from a jewellery and antiques website.
