I am helping a relative sort through a large coin collection and silver hoard, and we found this 1834 Canadian Half Cent. I am not familiar with foreign coins so I would appreciate it if someone can assess the history and value of this coin. Thank you! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I actually think this is a British half penny, as it would be Upper or Lower Canada in 1834

It's a Wellington half penny token and should actually be 1814, I believe. There are many varieties and I can't help you much with that.

thank you both. Come to think of it, the date does look closer to 1814. I don't see any 1834 Wellington tokens so it must be a weakly struck 1. Looked like a 3. Ill see if I can find others like this one.

After some research this looks like a 1814 Wellington Half Penny Canada Colonial Token; Charlton WE-8A, Breton 979. Can anyone confirm this?

The photos are somwhat dark, but it appears to be Charlton WE-8A, with 6 possible major varities. The epaulette looks to be square, which would make it variety 1,2 or 3. It appears to be variety 3, but I can not see all the markers clearly in your photos, so take that with a grain of salt (varieties 1 through 3 have similiar retail values in any event).
So WE-8A3.

Interesting token.
I really like the early Canadian tokens. Thanks for posting this one ... now if I see one I will know what it is.

reviving this old thread.... what does the WE number refer to? I see several different ones on ebay for this same coin, or what appears at a glance to be the same coin. ditto the Breton number? TIA, Judy

the WE number is the listing number in the Charlton Catalogue of Canadian Tokens. WE being the prefix for the WEllington tokens. If you are collecting Canadian colonial tokens this book is the basic must have item. Breton numbers are from an earlier work by Pierre Napoleon Breton
