I know I have posted pics of this before but I just found this one tonight in a roll. It has been at least 8 years since I have seen one in circulation. Just thought it was neat and wanted to share. Michael

I have one of those somewhere around here...found it at the local dealer years ago. Mine's a 1996D as well, probably from the same die.
And these 1996D cents are the ONLY ones like them I've ever seen.
And yes, they are reduction lathe gouges. VERY cool!

Your never to old to learn. I've also seen one of these and mistakenly thought is was just a fingerprint.

Fingerprints RARELY make perfectly circular marks that exactly parallel the rim of the coin. That's the easiest way to tell these from fingerprints.
Again, though, I am not certain there's more than this one single die that exhibit these marks. I have NEVER seen on that was not a 1996D...and this is the third such example I have seen.

Charles are you saying this is the 3rd 1996D you have seen or third example of lathe marks?

I was so convinced about seeing one of these coins that I went back thru about 2000 cents looking for it. Found it. Nice shiny 1997 with big circular fingerprint right in front of profile. Duh.

They didn't happen just on obverse dies, but on reverse as well. The lathe marks are deeper than the hubbing on the die, so they remain untouched. On the obverse the lathe marks ca also be seen on the deeper parts of the die on the bust as well. I've seen them there are well.

Thanks Bill. When I see something out of the ordinary I save it for educational purposes.
