I posted this coin in another string and got no replies.

Figured I would try here and see what happens.

Anyways...Is this normal wear or Struck Through Grease?

I have found several that look like they had irregular wear and got rid of them all. Then I read something about coins being Struck Through Grease looking kind of like this.

This is the worst one I have found by far. The MM is almost unreadable.

Is it a keeper or spender?

Thanks again....Mont.

I am going to say that it likely heavy wear on the dies that struck them. I see alot of 2002/2003 that have that side very worn down on the obverse. If they have been through heavy circulation, this will increase wear when the coins that go through the rolling machines.

The die was heavily polished. There was probably a clash and a clumsy mint employee wasn't paying attention when he was polishing the die and he accidentally polished some of the devices off. No extra value. Just a good educational piece.

Note the devices affected? They are widened and weak. If this were a die polishing issue the devices would be narrow because the fields and devices would have been reduced.

The illustration the right shows what happens when a die is heavily polished. The fields are the part that are affected as they are the face/top of the die. The devices are deeper inside the die. (This makes the devices taller)
So it is not a die polishing issue. It is a Struck Through Grease error. The devices are tapered at the top and wider at the bottom. So when grease gets into the devices it prevents the tops (which are narrow) to not be formed.

If there were no grease in the dies this coin would be normal and this discussion would have never happened.
But it is an issue with a Struck Through Grease error on your coin. No extra premium for this until a very large percentage of the devices are prevented from striking up.

The more the blockage of grease, the more the interest.
