Hello. Pictured is an 1879 P Morgan reverse of '79. At first, I thought the line, which looks like two lines but is really just two sides of a single gouge, through the "I" and "B" (it's hard to see the "B" portion here) in Liberty indicated a VAM-210B1, because the initial description on the 1878 P VAM page says "Line through IB". My coin's line starts at the upper loop of the "B" and slants southwest through the lower part of the "I". But when I clicked onto that VAM's page, the description -- and especially the photos -- show a line starting at the upper part of the "I" and slanting southeast through the lower part of the "B".

The only other VAM that I saw with an "IB" line is 210B, but the line is in the same place.

My question: Is my coin just a variation of that VAM? Or a different VAM? Or not a VAM at all? It's hard to believe it's not at least related since the line in my coin has the same width, depth, and "look" to it as the one on the VAM page. The only difference is the direction in which the lines are headed.

Thank you for any help or insight you can provide.

- Rob

It looks like a contact mark to me.

Thanks for the responses. I know the photo's not great so I understand why you might think contact mark, but no, definitely not.
If you saw it through a loupe, you'd know what I mean. It has the exact characteristics of the lines in the other "Liberty" VAMs and has all the telltale attributes of similar Morgan lines.
Anyway, guess it'll remain a mystery for now, but thanks again just the same.
Rest in Peace

In response toDave700x, it is incuse, though the ridges on either side appear to be raised -- as if it's a tiny canal. The line starts in the upper portion of the "B" but it's very hard to see. It then goes through the "I" in a southwest direction.

I can't tell if the mark below the "Liberty" -- in the hair -- is a continuation of the line or something else (perhaps that's the contact mark you referenced.) It's similar in direction, though not exact, and it's a bit wider, with less defined edges.

Cascade, thank you for the VAM contact. Here are photos of the whole coin and another photo of the part in question. I know it's not great -- getting a close-up like this that's in focus with my camera (and my photography "skills") is next to impossible.

Anyway, thanks again everyone, and thanks for any additional insight you can give me.

It is damage. A contact mark or bag mark. The "canal" is the hit and the "ridges" are the displaced metal. Can't really VAM from those pics. It almost looks like it might be a 7/8 tf but that could just be nothing but an.artifact of the pics.
