There is a disagreement in our family about whether the coin on the right is a proof or just a business strike. Is there some way to determine the issue? (We realize that either way the coin is not valuable, but we are interested in knowing how to determine whether coins are proofs).

I'm interested in opinions on this too. But to me, it appears that both are biz strikes. One just had different life experiences and travels than the other.

I think the one on the right is a proof because of the rims

I can see the one on right could have started out as a proof

Yes, it is a proof judging on how nice the edge is.

A strong strike commonly can produce thicker rims though. That's why, that alone, would not mean it's a proof to me. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Its a proof coin, hard to tell by the pics but its a proof!
Many 50s/60s/early 70s proofs that have found there way into circulation often have that dull brownish finish that isn't quite mirror but isn't quite a normal coin (IE not fully lustrous, sometimes lacking any luster). They also can tone oddly such as this one (just like any other coin can)
Nice find! I'd keep it!

Impared proof IMO, the rims are too good for the business issue.

I agree - impaired proof. You kind of get an eye for these sorts of things after sticking around for a couple years lol. Nice find!

Quote: I think the one on the right is a proof because of the rims They seem quite distinctive! Quote: A strong strike commonly can produce thicker rims though. That's why, that alone, would not mean it's a proof to me. I think I see some traces of a very strong clean finish in the fields also (but perhaps not picked up in the photo). Quote: could have started out as a proof Once a proof, always a proof, no? I take it that "proof" refers to a process of production and not a grade. So, you could have a coin that grades PR-30, for example. Thanks, everyone, for the helpful comments. The discussion here mirrored the one we had in our family. I'll take it as a "possible impaired proof."

Yes, once a proof, always a proof.
