Great design for circulation loonies and Lucky Loonie! But overpriced roll? And what for to pay CAD 80 for Silver Dollar? same way I like "simple" RCM coins, I dislike the marketing way. This means, that RCM probably will not issue Circulation pack for face value.

Is the "Limited Silver Dollar" 36mm?
If it is, looks like I will adding a new coin to my collection soon.

36.07mm 23.17 grams 99.99 silver Look good with small colour Olympic logos Lucky loon is nicely done in the pictures, maybe a little to fussy but I won't know until I see it in hand.

This one kind of small "wow" - reminds the 2008 edition, but much more detailed and mirrored. The Silver Dollar - imagine coin with 7-8 people doing sports activity - basketball, cycling, athlete, swimming etc - and these "mini-pictures" combined on the surface. Not bad. Still not getting the price.

@Falcon/@Silveroid: Thanks much for the info! The $80 CAD price point doesn't surprise me. The RCM started charging $69.95 for its unadorned "Special Edition" and "Limited Edition" SDs back in 2012; at least for those with 10K mintage. Last year's In Flanders Fields SE SD with red enamel was a bit more, it sold for $79.95. I guess the RCM figured that the coloured Olympic logo on this one justifies the $80 price point. Of course, I'd prefer the price to be lower, but at about $62 USD (based on the current conversion rate) the new coin's price isn't all that bad IMO.

So this makes it the 3rd SD this year, maybe one more yet. It was quite difficult (well expensive) to get my SDs caught up, I'm not about to let my collection lag! The Lucky Loonie, sold by the roll, I'm assuming the same are to be released into circulation? Anyone know? I also like the 5 packs -- a roll of 25, a few more left-overs than I really need. 25X$1 = $49.95 is also quite a markup compared to a bankroll. Oh well, there'll be lots of singles for sale on ebay. I have a circulation-only Loonie collection that I'm also keeping current to pique my grandson's future interest in overall coin collecting.

It's no different markup to the 50cent rolls $12.50 FV for $24.95. But, I do agree, double the FV just because they are wrapped in 'special wrap' seems a bit extreme to me.

That's why I wonder if the Lucky Lonnie will be released into circulation, as opposed to the 50c which is an exception. But I can't recall RCM ever selling specially wrapped rolls of any other multi-ply steel denomination.

Added: it does seem that when special wrapped rolls are issued (at significant premiums), the uncirculated 5 packs are not issued. That could mean face value only at a bank or PO or from pocket change.

Off topic, in the gc.gazette dated June 3, 2016 I notice an interesting upcoming 2016 circulation toonie ...somewhere buried may be the record of the 2016 Lucky Loonie. " RCM wishes to produce a commemorative $2 circulation coin in honour of Canada's veterans on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Canada's leadership role in the Battle of the Atlantic (1939-1945)." http://gazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p2/2016/...s122-eng.php

Thanks for the info, yes that leaves those choices, plus ebay. My experience with pocket change loonies has not been worthwhile. Regardless of how "new" they might look upon capture, they get dingy and dull looking shortly thereafter.

QUESTION: (May be my big DUH moment)
Are the new 3 ply brass steel lucky loonies in the wrap, the same as the ones that will be put into circulation or are they made with a different material?

The composition seems to be the same as circulation loonies. That must be some real special wrap. $1 Composition: Multi-ply brass plated steel http://www.mint.ca/store/mint/about....V2NNI5DOerUAlthough I suppose years into the future, the RCM wrap does ensure it hasn't been opened and pre-searched for whatever reason. Some ebay sellers sell "unopened" bank rolls at a premium, but there's no way to know for sure.

so is it safe to assume that the Olympic Loonie will be available at the bank? Not special wrap but regular wrap?
Edit: and the mintage of 52,000 only apply for the special wrap and not for all circulation coins for this lucky loonie right?
